Golden Age Restoration Tuners for Solid Peghead Guitar with Scallop-end

About This Item

Pre-war Kluson style tuners reborn! Replica 3-on-plate tuners with "bent tab" worm supports, as made by Kluson from the 1930s to the '70s.

They feature authentic steel baseplates and white plastic knobs, plus 15:1 gear ratio for better tuning than the originals.

Golden Age tuners are exclusively from Stewart-MacDonald, made with our eye for details and exact specifications.

"People who build replica instruments or who do restoration or repair work are just going to love these."
—Frank Ford, vintage instrument repair expert

Golden Age tuners are the rebirth of popular early 20th Century tuning machine designs, featuring simple steel plates and open gears. Replacements for the originals have long been sought by collectors and repairmen, to restore older guitars and improve their tuning. Our special relic nickel-finished versions complement vintage hardware and add an authentic look to reproduction guitars.

Bright nickel tuners have original-shape white plastic knobs. Relic nickel tuners have the same knobs, but with a matte finish.

  • 15:1 gear ratio for improved tuning
  • Vintage-style riveted worm supports
  • .236" (6.00mm) string post diameter
  • Press-fit peghead bushings
  • Original mounting screw spacing (screws incuded)
  • 1-3/8" (34.93mm) string post spacing
Also available to fit slotted pegheads.

"The Golden Age Restoration tuners are really great. I have just put them onto my 1929 Gibson L-1...I like the fact that someone went to the trouble of making them look right."
—John Evans, Brussels Belgium

"Great tuners with the right look and feel! The only thing different about them is that they are better made and more functional."
—Richard Barnes, Pomona CA

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly aligned. Our Tuner Drill Jig ensures the correct 1-3/8" post spacing for accurate tuning.

Bushings: We recommend the #2062 Bushing Reamer (.340" diameter) to cut a clean, accurate counterbore for a professional job. Fit the press-fit tuner bushings correctly so your tuners will work smoothly.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1714 Depth-stop Drill Bit (3/32" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

Golden age restoration tuners

(Customer's Reviews)

Great product, great service.

Great Tuners

(Customer's Reviews)

They were a perfect drop-in fit for my '46 Gibson J45. They are very smooth and keep tune. The only minor negative is that the buttons are sooo bright white, but I rubbed them down with some shoe polish and they now look like they belong on the guitar.

Perfect fit

(Customer's Reviews)

I bought these tuners for my '46 LG2, the fitting is perfect, and quality is like the older ones, only the time will tell us about duration.
The ferrules are wrong, yes wrong, before install to guitar, better search (or use) the old style ones, no rimming and modifiction requested and historically correct.

perfect to replace klusons

(Customer's Reviews)

These were drop in for the klusons that I had. They were new klusons, not vintage if that makes a difference, but the screws lined up and looks a lot better on my old guitar. They are quite stiff and stout which most folks like, they do seem a lot more solid than the new klusons I had bought to replace some broken junk that was on the guitar when I aquired it. It's a heavily repaired 57 Gibson J50, with a really funny history, sounds great, looks unusual but I love it.

Just what I wanted. Thanks

Perfect fit for 1942 Gibson SJ

(Customer's Reviews)

After measuring original tuners several to insure fit with no rework to guitar peghead, I made choice to buy the Golden Age Restoration Tuners. I could reuse the original tuner grommets to avoid reaming existing holes to maintain the guitar as original as possible. Great to be playing this great instrument again! Next mission is to find a replacement tuner gear to fix the original Kluson tuner.

This lap steel is in perfect condiction except tuning machines were bent. Yours fit perfect and since I play this one I wanted it to work .

For 1942 Gretsch American Orchestra Model 50

(Customer's Reviews)

The plate and mounting holes perfectly matched the imprint and holes from the original tuners. These tuners work very well and helped made this project a success. I'd LOVE to see cream and black buttons offered.

Nice tuners

(Customer's Reviews)

I used the relic nickel tuners to replace the pre-war Klusons on a 1940 Harmony Patrician. The fit was perfect, but the knobs were too white. I used some Golden Yellow Rit dye to give the knobs some patina so the new tuners didn't look out of place on the old guitar.

perfect replacement

(Customer's Reviews)

Replaced the tuners on a 1944 Epiphone archtop and these look great and even the screw holes lined up. I replaced the white knobs with StewMac black plastic to match the originals. These tuners fit the oblong/rectangular hole knobs, so the black or cream ones will fit.
