Golden Age Restoration Tuners for Solid Peghead Guitar with Scallop-end

About This Item

Pre-war Kluson style tuners reborn! Replica 3-on-plate tuners with "bent tab" worm supports, as made by Kluson from the 1930s to the '70s.

They feature authentic steel baseplates and white plastic knobs, plus 15:1 gear ratio for better tuning than the originals.

Golden Age tuners are available exclusively from StewMac, made with our expert eye for details and exact specifications.

"People who build replica instruments or who do restoration or repair work are just going to love these."
—Frank Ford, vintage instrument repair expert

Golden Age tuners are the rebirth of popular early 20th Century tuning machine designs, featuring simple steel plates and open gears. Replacements for the originals have long been sought by collectors and repairmen, to restore older guitars and improve their tuning. Our special relic nickel-finished versions complement vintage hardware and add an authentic look to reproduction guitars.

Bright nickel tuners have original-shape white plastic knobs. Relic nickel tuners have the same knobs, but with a matte finish.

  • 15:1 gear ratio for improved tuning
  • Vintage-style riveted worm supports
  • .236" (6.00mm) string post diameter
  • Press-fit peghead bushings
  • Original mounting screw spacing (screws incuded)
  • 1-3/8" (34.93mm) string post spacing
Also available to fit slotted pegheads.

"The Golden Age Restoration tuners are really great. I have just put them onto my 1929 Gibson L-1...I like the fact that someone went to the trouble of making them look right."
—John Evans, Brussels Belgium

"Great tuners with the right look and feel! The only thing different about them is that they are better made and more functional."
—Richard Barnes, Pomona CA

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly aligned. Our Tuner Drill Jig ensures the correct 1-3/8" post spacing for accurate tuning.

Bushings: We recommend the #2062 Bushing Reamer (.340" diameter) to cut a clean, accurate counterbore for a professional job. Fit the press-fit tuner bushings correctly so your tuners will work smoothly.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1714 Depth-stop Drill Bit (3/32" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

Great tuners with a vintage look and modern functionality

By

Bought these as a replacement for the original tuners on a 1965 Gibson Melody Maker DC (Pelham Blue!). The original tuners were bent and had too much play. The Golden Age were a drop-in replacement (I kept the original bushings, however), so no drilling or modifications were necessary. They look great and are vastly superior to the junky originals. StewMac for the win!

Smooth operating, but....

I bought this tuner to replace a tired tuner on a 1938 Gibson lap steel. The color of the tuner is closer to auto gray primer, not really a aged steel appearance. The plastic tuner knobs are jump at you white, not really a good aged cream appearance. They did fit perfectly and work smooth. I will remove them, replace them with another tuner to better match the guitar.

I Love These Tuners

I would have loved to have these back in the 70's when I first got into this trade. They are a well engineered, perfect drop in replacement for old Grover and Kluson tuners. So many great old headstocks were bored out for more modern machines, much to their detriment. These allow you to have the classic look with much improved performance.

These are a great choice for replacing original tuners on the old Harmony and Silvertone guitars. Now you can actually tune them without pliers!

Gibson L2 Restoration

By

These tuners worked great for replacement of the original tuners on an L2 I recently restored. They fit perfectly without any new holes and are almost an exact match of the old ones, with the exception that they look new and work a lot better. Love to see more of these kind of tuner for older guitars.

Tuners slid right into place, replacing the originals on a 1967 Epiphone Caballero. Very high quality and highly recommended.

Perfect Fit !!

I recently purchased a 1968 Gibson LG-0 in extremely good condition except for the original tuners which were just shot. With these Golden Age tuners I was able to replace them directly with absolutely no modification. I even was able to use the old screws and bushings, (new ones came with the tuners). I called with questions before making this purchase and as always, customer service is excellent as well as prompt shipping.
So the old tuners are resting peacefully in the case and the old guitar is singing happily !!

Exactly like the old ones

I needed a replacement for the old tuning machines of my 30ies Recording King. These new one fit my guitar perfectly. I have kept the old bushings so it looks even more originals. They work better than the old Klusons. Maybe the knobs are a little bit too white....
