Golden Age Restoration Tuners for 12-String Slotted Peghead Guitar

About This Item

At last! Quality authentic style machines for slotted-peghead Martin, Stella, and similar 12-string guitars.

Their simple open-gear 6-on-plate design will improve tuning without adding significant weight to the peghead. Relic nickel finish adds an authentic look to vintage and reproduction instruments. Complete set for 12-string slotted peghead.

"For 20 years we've been dying for someone to manufacture tuners like these. People who build replica instruments or who do any restoration or repair work are just going to love these. Absolutely terrific, StewMac!"
— Frank Ford, Gryphon Stringed Instruments, Palo Alto CA

"Guys like me have waited a long time for these, and they're a dream come true. They're great — nice and tight, with a good gear ratio, and they allow me to keep the old-style spacing so I can have a headstock of the same dimensions as the originals."
— Todd Cambio, Fraulini Guitars

  • Rectangular steel baseplates with vintage-style square riveted worm supports
  • Steel string posts for slotted pegheads
  • 15:1 gear ratio for improved tuning
  • Original-shape cream or black plastic knobs
  • .922" (23.42mm) string post spacing
  • .236" (6.00mm) string post diameter
  • Mounting screws included
Note: Mounting screw spacing on original 12-string tuners varied widely.

Installation Tips

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1714 Depth-stop Drill Bit (3/32" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

Golden Age  slotted head 12 string tuners

By

My 1969 D12-20 Martin tuners have been worn out for 25 years and it was hardly ever played. I figured it was a goner. Always going out of tune when played. But then, these Golden Age replacements became aware to me, so I ordered them from StewMac. To my delight, they fit the old Martin slot head perfectly! I had to drill some new holes in the tuners to match my Martin's attachment holes which then matched perfectly. I am handy with my tools. Otherwise, I would have had to drill new holes in my Martin head and after careful measuring,I decided to drill the tuner plates instead. My choice worked great. There was lots of clearance on the plates where I drilled the new mounting holes. Some of the original plate holes lined up , so I only had to drill a few new holes on each plate. I'm Way Satisfied. Thanks

Excellent conversion for Tiple ukulele

By

Except for the 2 extra posts, these tuners had almost exactly the right specs to replace the tuners on my 10-string Regal Tiple Ukulele. The posts were about .02 inches larger than the original posts. A 15/64" drill was used to expand the post holes. Make sure to verify that the tuners are in the correct direction to tighten the strings and then remove one of posts so that the fit and alignment can be tested. When everything is right, use a 32 tpi small hacksaw blade to cut off the trailing end leaving room for drilling a new screw hole. What's even better these golden age tuners look very similar to the originals. I couldn't be happier with the results.

Great replacement

I recently restored a 1902-1904 Grunewald Harp Twelve Guitar. This was the forerunner of the twelve string guitars. The old tuners were in bad shape. But these tuners were an exact match and truly represented the style and age of the origional ones. Great job Stew Mac. Luthier Larry Threet, Lexington SC

A needed fix

These are a great replacement for those early Martin 12 string slot head tuners that are almost always virtually non-functioning. Makes those old beauties a breeze to tune up.

Nice tuners but...

Those are nice tuners, a bit expensive and be ware of the screws - they are very soft! don't push them too much, they will be damaged

These look beautiful. Very high quality. Ended up not needing them for the job but I'm sure they would function well. Saving them for something nice.
