Grover F-Style 309 Mandolin Tuning Machines

About This Item

Grover F-style mandolin tuners are available in two different gear configurations, with engraved die-cast baseplates and 18:1 gear ratio.

Standard 29/32" (23mm) string post spacing.
11/32"-diameter (8.73mm) pegholes required.

Each set includes:
• Pair of 4-left, 4-right tuning machines
• Removable pearloid plastic knobs
• Press-fit peghead bushings
• Mounting screws

Available in two different gear configurations:
#5675 with worm gear under string post (turn the the knob counterclockwise to tighten the string)
#5674 with worm gear over string post (turn the knob clockwise to tighten the string)
Important: These two styles may not be interchangeable on the same peghead. See Specs before ordering.

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly drilled. Our Mandolin Peghead Drill Jig ensures precise 29/32" spacing for accurate alignment for these tuning machines.

Bushings: We recommend the Standard Peghole Reamer to cut smooth, perfectly round holes.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1711 Depth-stop Drill Bit (No.50 bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

I've used these tuners quite a few times and are worth more than the price.

Recommended upgrade for Washburn Mandolin

My Washburn F style is what I'm learning on and the stock tuners always frustrated me. Changing to the Grover Tuners was fairly easy and a huge improvement. They turn smoothly and evenly, hold the tension they are turned to and smoothly add or remove tension making it much easier to tune. Mandolins are fussy to tune and these were the best tuners I could get as my Washburn has the worms under.

Here's my Morgan Monroe with new Grover F309N on right (StewMac #5674, original set on left). Right set took me 50minutes to figure out and install. Left set then only took me 10minutes to replace. Used capo to hold strings in place while installing new tuners (wanted to see how new tuners performed before changing strings). Old strings were two years old - changing them with original turners was a nightmare. But now with these Grovers, I changed strings next day & what a breeze.

Wish I'd Have Done This Sooner

Installed the F309N (StewMac #5674) tuner sets on my Morgan Monroe - wish I had done this sooner. These Grovers are so smooth, so soild & made my mandolin sound so much fuller. The Grovers were a near perfect fit - perfect post spacing, precise bushing-post clearance. Just needed to drill new top & bottom mounting screw holes using a #53 (0.0595") drill bit (was able to reuse the inner three mounting holes being careful to first back-start the screws until they seated in existing threads). Thank you StewMac for helping me select these Grovers. And thank you too for your Trade Secrets videos - I watch them all & they gave me the courage & knowledge to give this a try.

Incredible! Beautiful! Tight! Very high quality and fit like a glove on my Savannah F100. Had to make just a couple of small adjustments but otherwise fit like a glove and work perfectly. Smooth and precise when tuning, accurate and stable once set. What a great upgrade to the factory machines that came on the instrument.

My Christmas Present to myself paid for by my wife, who bought the Mandolin in the first place. Gotta Love a girl like that. Tuners fit perfectly in my Oscar Schmidt OM40. Trying to replace the buttons as they crumbled was a trial due to the fact that the shafts had a stamped flat spot on them that never gave you a tight fit. The Grovers are beautiful and work beautifully.

I put these turners on a new Washburn Mandolin and pitched the crappy turners that came on it.
GREAT TURNERS!

Tuning machines cause misery or pleasure

I needed a set of machines for my new Eastman MD-315 as its original machines were crap. I checked internet inside Australia but to no avail then I checked StewMac. The products arrived earlier than I expected and bit of works (1. Grover's base plate has small washers around string posts so that I had to grind around the post holes. 2. distances between post holes are exactly the same but those of screw holes of Grover are slightly shorter than the original machines. I fil the original screw holes and drilled new ones.) Grover machines have nice touch, rather heavy but smooth like wading in an oil puddle. It costs but worth it.
