Grover A-Style 309 Mandolin Tuning Machines

About This Item

Engraved die-cast baseplates, 18:1 gear ratio. Complete sets of 4-left/4-right tuners, with equal-length knob shafts and removable pearloid plastic knobs.

Standard 29/32" (23mm) string post spacing. Drill the peghole to 5/16" (7.94mm) and ream the face with our standard peghole reamer.

Each set includes:
• Pair of 4-left, 4-right tuning machines
• Removable pearloid plastic knobs
• Press-fit peghead bushings
• Mounting screws

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly drilled. Our Mandolin Peghead Drill Jig ensures precise 29/32" spacing for accurate alignment for these tuning machines.

Bushings: We recommend the Standard Peghole Reamer to cut smooth, perfectly round holes.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1711 Depth-stop Drill Bit (No.50 bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

Huge Improvement

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I purchased a used entry level mandolin. It would not hold tune at all - by the time the last string was brought to tune, the earlier strings were out of tune. In short, it was unplayable. I replaced the strings which did not help, so I decided to replace the tuners. I installed the Grover tuners and it absolutely did the trick. The instrument now holds tune very well and I have really been enjoying learning the mandolin. I absolutely recommend these tuners.

Staying in tune!

I put this set of tuners in a Michael Kelly mandolin that had trouble staying in tune for very long. It was an easy installation and it fixed the problem. I am a happy camper!

Replaced the stock tuners on my Trinity mandolin. The stock tuners were rubbish and had to go. Now with the Grovers, it sounds a lot better and stays in tune. A highly recommended upgrade. Thanks Grover and Stewmac.

These Grover Mando Tuners are unbeatable! I use them on all my builds and I'm getting ready to purchase some for the Cigar Box UKE that I'm currently building! Thanks for all you do Mr Stewmac!

309 A Style Tuners

Excellent product! Drop in fit on my The Loar LM-300 mandolin. Had to fill the old screw holes (3) and drill new ones (5), but no big deal. I would like a choice of tuner knobs as standard, but black ones are available. They function much better than the original equipment, in my opinion.

On my 3rd Grover upgrade.

So far I've replaced the stock tuners on one Breedlove mando and a Collings mandola. The Grovers are excellent, and the 18:1 ratio is really helpful for tuning precision. Beware - if you're picky about aesthetics, the Grovers hang off the bottom of the headstock on both instruments about 2mm. Some might consider that unsightly, I don't really care 'cause they *work* and I'm no longer fighting my tuners. The other visual issue (as mentioned by other reviewers) is the tuning shaft 'stickout'. I happen to like both the look and better access to the key, especially on the Collings with the concave shape of the peghead sides. The only mounting hole to line up on either instrument was the center one. I drilled both for the next pair of holes out from center. Outer holes on both are unused because the stock holes are just far enough out to a)not accept screws properly, and b)not allow enough material beside the existing holes to drill new holes. Works for me, but a 'proper' install is going to require filling and redrilling for the outer screws. Fair warning.

A bit bulky

They are good quality and work well. The base plate is large so be careful when profiling the back of the neck.

Oversized base and shafts!

By
(Customer's Reviews)

These have great gears and tuning performance. The main issue I have with these tuners is the overall look is over-sized and just don't look right on a mandolin. The reason is the base and tuner shafts are about 3/16" longer than every other tuners available. The plastic pearl buttons also mediocre.

Great - I use these type of tuners for making Mandolins and Boozuikis. The weight is excellent, and the keep the tune for a long time. Superb! Attached is a photo of what we are making with them. Cheers Bernie from Donegal Fiddles, New Zealand
