Pre-war tuners reborn! Our replica 3-on-plate tuners with simple incised baseplates, as produced by Waverly from the 1920s to the '40s.

They feature authentic steel baseplates and cream knobs, plus 15:1 gear ratio for better tuning than the originals.

Golden Age tuners are exclusively from Stewart-MacDonald, made with our eye for details and exact specifications.

"People who build replica instruments or who do restoration or repair work are just going to love these." —Frank Ford, vintage instrument repair expert

Golden Age tuners are exclusively from Stewart-MacDonald, made with our eye for details and exact specifications. Golden Age tuners are the rebirth of popular early 20th Century tuning machine designs, featuring simple steel plates and open gears. Replacements for the originals have long been sought by collectors and repairmen, to restore older guitars and improve their tuning. Our special relic nickel-finished versions complement vintage hardware and add an authentic look to reproduction guitars.

  • 15:1 gear ratio for improved tuning
  • Vintage-style riveted worm supports
  • Original-shape cream plastic knobs: matte knobs on the relic tuners, glossy knobs on the bright nickel tuners
  • .236" (6.00mm) string post diameter
  • Press-fit peghead bushings
  • Original mounting screw spacing (screws included)
  • 1-3/8" (34.93mm) string post spacing
  • Bright nickel, relic nickel or relic brass finishes

Also available to fit slotted pegheads.

Note: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly aligned. Our Tuner Drill Jig ensures the correct spacing for accurate tuning.

"The Golden Age Restoration tuners are really great. I have just put them onto my 1929 Gibson L-1. I like the fact that someone went to the trouble of making them look right." —John Evans, Brussels Belgium

"Great tuners with the right look and feel! The only thing different about them is that they are better made and more functional." —Richard Barnes, Pomona CA

Nice but not great

By John Trafeli from San Diego, CA
(Customer's Reviews) Tuesday, October 07, 2014

I purchased these to replace the original brass tuners on my late 30's Gibson L-00. It was difficult to find tuners that fit the 1.23" screw spacing. But these did. I was hoping to find some Waverly's, but there are the only ones to fit. They look great, however, the gearing is not as tight and mimics the play on an original set...unlike the way Waverly's are smooth. You get (I got) what you pay for....So, good, but not great.

Very nice!

I bought these tuners to replace original tuners on a 40's Harmony lap steel I'd restored and modified. The original tuners were in amazing shape and fully operational. But I use this instrument for recording, and the old tuners were never great. The new tuners provided an easier tuning experience, a better gear ratio, AND they look great. The quality is evident. They pretty much dropped right in, spacing-wise, another plus. Huge overall improvement even though there was nothing technically wrong with the originals.

Golden Age Restoration Tuners

By S.Martin from UK
(Customer's Reviews) Thursday, April 18, 2013

I needed new tuners for my 1978 Guild D-25, so ordered a set of Golden Age Restoration Tuners. I was a bit concerned whether they would fit properly (especially as I live in UK!) but no worries, they fit perfectly...even the screw holes matched up exactly & they look just great! (I just had to get some 10mm ferules to match the holes in the peg head)

Bought these to replace the tired old ones in my early 60's melody maker.
Worked like a charm.
I also dropped a lollar melody maker P90 in the bridge, WOW!

I bought a set of these to replace the original Klusons in my B25N. It now plays solidly in tune and has much more sustain. I love these

Golden Age tuners

By Julian Mokhtar from Malaysia
(Customer's Reviews) Sunday, November 25, 2012

I ordered a set of restoration tuners with bell end baseplates, along with a couple of other items to install on a 1969 Gibson Melody Maker. The original tuners had been lost along with the original bridge/tailpiece. They arrived within days, and I have to say Stew-Mac's customer service is excellent, both by email and phone. The tuners are well made, no loose or wobbly bits, and they fit perfectly. The baseplate dimensions didn't exactly match the footprint of the originals, but that was OK since the customer wasn't particular about being 100% period correct.
