Waverly Guitar Strap Button

About This Item

Details make the difference: these beautiful strap buttons match our bridge pins, and the knobs on Waverly guitar tuning machines.

They'll add a touch of class to your guitar. Each is precisely machined (none of the unsightly mold lines found on plastic buttons), and polished to accent the beauty of the material. A special countersunk brass bushing helps protect the button against overtightening — a unique StewMac feature.

Button diameter: 17/32" (13.28mm)
Button height: 7/16" (11.11mm)

Sold individually.

Strap button felt washers protect your guitar's finish.

Our white, ivoroid, and dark tortoise strap buttons are made of Galalith, a dense and durable casein-based material that polishes beautifully. Popular in the early 20th century, Galalith is seen today mainly in collectible vintage jewelry. It cannot be molded; each pin is precisely machined and has none of the unsightly mold lines common to plastic pins.

Elegant Strap Button

I just replaced the gold plated steel strap buttons on my two guitars, one with a Snakewood button, the other with an Ebony button. These strap buttons are very elegant, they look like they grew on the neck heel and truly belong there, unlike the metal ones I removed. Anyone installing one of these buttons should know that the screw is more substantial than the ones attaching the metal strap buttons. Be sure to make the hole larger to fit the new screw, which is not only larger in diameter, but longer as well, don't just torque it down into the underside and shorter hole, be sure also to use the felt washers supplied separately, I ended up using two of them. I would also recommend not tightening the button down so tight that it can't rotate on it's screw, fracturing the lower skirt of the button is a distinct possibility. I ended up using a small amount of Titebond applied at the bottom of the hole so that it would not squeeze out on to the washers, and tightened against the two felt washers compressing them only enough slightly snug it so that the button would rotate fairly easily when turned with my fingers. This secures the screw tightly, and prevents compressing the skirt of the button against the curved surface of the heel and possibly cracking it. I really like the Waverly Strap Buttons, but one should not just crank them down, they are wood after all and can be broken. If one fails to size the hole properly, he could possibly split the neck heel, and do some real damage. Stew-Mac might consider offering instructions for the unwary, I figured all this out on my own, but not every one will. My Snakewood button developed a crack in the skirt, and had to be replaced even though I did not torque it down hard and it did rotate on the screw, Stew Mac replaced it at no charge with no shipping charge as well, who knows why the skirt of the button cracked. I recommend the use of two felt washers, a drop of glue in the reworked screw hole that you drill, and tighten the screw only enough to secure the button, only lightly compressing the washers. I like my buttons and would never go back to the plated steel buttons.

Worked great. Use a 3/32 drill bit and some soap on the screw so it goes in easily.

Did the job

Needed a strap button on a Takamine. This one was easy to find, came fast, took 5min to install. The brass bushing was a nice plus; didn't notice it in the description the first time. Bought a package of felt washers, but installed the button on a flat spot in the cutaway and didn't need them.
