Wilkinson/Gotoh VS-100N Tremolo for Jackson (by Fender)

By
(Customer's Reviews)

First of all, let me say that this is a solid bridge. It's made of higher-quality metal than the most replacements I have seen, and the black anodized model really looks great! A definite upgrade to the appearance of my little Jackson. If you are considering this for a standard strat upgrade, it likely deserves 4 or 5 stars.

This review is intended for people (like me) who are trying to make it work on a "strat-similar" guitar that has slightly different dimensions, so please read this review in that context.

To be fair, the dimensions are clearly shown on the product page, so I was aware that this bridge was about 4mm shorter from post location to the nominal position of the string saddles. What I didn't consider is that the travel (both vertically and horizontally) of the saddles is much shorter on this bridge than it was on my original bridge, so setting string height and intonation became a bit of a challenge.

Luckily, the height adjustments screws from the original bridge had the same diameter and thread, so I was able to replace the shorter screws in this bridge with the longer ones from the Jackson bridge. The travel issue was a bit more problematic though. While I have been able to set the intonation on 4 of the 6 strings, there is not quite enough travel for the other two to get the saddle into the position it needs to be in for perfect tuning. I was able to get close, but not quite as far as needed. (The fretted note on the 12th fret is 1 or 2 cents sharp in the maximum location.)

It's not terrible -- I guess I always have the option of filling in the post holes and drilling new ones. However, I had hoped for a simple, drop-in replacement that would give me better tremolo stability and improve some of the tuning issues I was having with the original bridge. The plan was to upgrade the guitar a bit so I could work it into the regular gigging rotation. With the intonation issues, this probably isn't going to happen without some more serious work.

This is not a criticism of the bridge in any way. It's more of a "buyer beware" message for people who are looking to put this on something "strat-like" that isn't specifically a strat. If you are looking for a drop-in replacement for a lower-cost guitar (like the lower-cost Jacksons), pay careful attention to the dimensions and/or be prepared for some modifications to get it right.

Wilkinson the Wonderful!

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I decided to replaced the original (1992) Fender stock tremolo / bridge with the VS-100N.
#1 I should have done this years ago. # 2 It has made me a better player because I can't keep my damn hands off this guitar...so my practice time has increased. Just looking at it puts a wobble in my walk! The Wilkinson is sooo smooth it really puts the Fender tremolo to shame. The overall look and feel is seamless and with locking tuners, this thing stays in tune extremely well. I had it installed and set up professionally and kept the bridge in full floating mode, (not blocked). I also believe that there is better tonal resonance with this bridge making it all deep, dark and delicious when I play the blues on this thing. With all that being said...I need to stop the review here, and get my hands around the neck of that Strat. Glory be to the highest with Wilkinson VS-100N!!!!!

A vast improvement

I'm not a luthier, so I got my guy to fit this for me, and I'm still 'running it in' so to speak.. But happy so far. I expect a few weeks of fettling until I settle on how I like it set up. There's a confusing amount of 'how to' videos out there, but trial and error is OK by me. For instance, I tried it 'locked down' briefly, so that when I bent a g-string for example, the b wouldn't go flat as the overall tension changed.. But didn't like the knocking sound as the block contacted the recess hole when the trem settled back. The full floating option also means a string break is rather more drastic.. But full floating feels more natural to me anyway. The trem looks very clean and modern. The 6 screw version looked like a big, ugly metal players device, in comparison. Even though my Strat is '73 vintage, I would rather bore 2 large holes for the pivot posts in it than put the 6 screw version on! Great service, great unit. No complaints!

My Favorite Vibrato Bridge

Excellent quality bridge. I upgraded mine with a solid brass block, but even with the stock block it sounds very nice. Tuning stability is excellent (I use Schaller locking tuners) and the engineering is simple and effective.

Great Tremolo but ....

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I ordered these from here over 12 years ago. Both are doing the job well : knife points still sharp, returning to perfect pitch every time.
One bad thing, the tremolo arm retainer that attaches to the bottom of the base plate has gotten lose and is making some noise .... I wish Stew-Mac twist Wilkinsons arm into selling the parts here .... hint... hint
Great Tremolo, that surpases the traditional Fender tremolo system, adds more sustain due to the nice fat block under the base plate and is great if you don't want to carve up your guitar for a Floyd Rose tremolo. Just get a nice roller nut, locking tuners and dive bomb / vibrato to your heart's content.

Good choice great trem

I was looking to replace the bridge in my 2001 MIM strat and decided to check the Wilkinson.
I had to slightly adjust the holes and get it to fit right. After the upgrade is done I was amazed! The guitar sounds great! I could lower the action with no buzz, easy to intonate and adjust saddle height, using the tremolo is now great fun without losing the tune (replaced also tuners with Sperzel Trim-Lok very good combo). Arrived quicker than I expected.

My old Wilkinson bridge had a breakage (it was 15+ years old)--the new one fit right in, looks even more solid, and the trem arm now screws in unlike the old one. Fantastic.
