Waverly Ukulele Friction Pegs

About This Item

"The smoothest and most consistent-working non-geared ukulele tuning pegs I've ever seen, new or old." —Matt Umanov, Umanov Guitars, NYC

In the early 1900s the ukulele was king. Waverly uke pegs bring back a simple but innovative non-geared design that tuned many fine instruments: the knob screw adjusts the tension, and an internal coil spring provides smoothness and slip-resistance. Unsurpassed by standard friction tuners, they combine precision-machined quality with an authentic vintage look. Simply the finest traditional friction pegs you can install on your ukulele.

Nickel-plated brass, set of 4.

Waverly Ukulele Friction Pegs offer modern precision with vintage style, ideal for instrument restoration. Waverly tuners will work properly in pegholes with diameters between 7/32" and 1/4" (5.56mm to 6.35mm).

For new builds, we recommend drilling a 3/16" (5mm) peghole diameter.

For appearance and proper function, pegholes should be chamfered for the top washer and the rear housing. We have just the right countersink bit for cutting this chamfer.

Peghead thickness can vary from 5/16" to 9/16" (7.94mm to 14.29mm).

Must, must, must, drill correctly

By

Nice but pricy! The pegs are tiny and would probably work better on an 8 string where space for larger tuners would be an issue. I wanted better ones for my soprano but did not take precautions on the countersink drilling without a drill press. The tuners did not sit square and it was impossible to turn the pegs to tune. Koa pegs got indented and loose from the force of turning. Cleaned and resurfaced the old ones and put them back on which was all it needed.

Waverly ukulele pegs

Pay the extra money

By

I had never used these sort of tuners before but used these to replace some very worn ones on a post war baritone Harmony uke. They keep tune very well and they're smooth to operate. One star down because I thought the knobs could be just a little bigger.

Tuner luv

Brought my 1927 Vita-Uke back to life in the easiest way. Everything works perfectly and looks awesome. Very pleased.

Very hard to install

By
(Customer's Reviews)

Maybe it's me, but these things were very very difficult to install. To find the receiving end of the screw to tighten is a bear. The tuning ears themselves are tiny. This all makes for clumsy dropping and repeated attempts at finding the threads to screw down. Once installed they appear to do the job if you get that far.

Beautiful little things!

Much, much better than the things that came with the soprano kit! Nicely made, nicely finished!

They add a classy touch to a well finished instrument!

Great new / old tuner

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I had a 20's Martin 2M that had the original version of these tuners, and they are desired by the vintage collectors. When Waverly reintroduced these in a very authentic manner, I knew they had a winner. They work very well, the spring really has a great, functional purpose, and they enhance the sale of my ukes, which is the most important thing!

Welcome Addition

By
(Customer's Reviews)

These new friction tuners are a welcome addition for ukulele builders. They are the only ones I know of with a spring that provides friction pressure, making getting just the right amount for each string possible. Stewmac suggests also buying their bridge pin counter sink bit, but it's not the best for the job. What's required is a 100 degree c.s. bit for the top and 60 degree c.s. bit for the back of the head stock. (The Stewmac bit appears to be 82¦). Using the right bits will give full contact between the tuner and the hole.
