Skin Banjo Head

About This Item

For a truly original mellow banjo sound, a natural skin head is first choice. Unmounted calfskin; fits rims up to 12" in diameter.

Installation instructions included.

Choosing the right size banjo head
Measure your banjo for the correct head diameter
Your banjo's rim may be slightly out of round, so take at least three diameter measurements at different points on the outside of the banjo's tone ring or rim top. Use the average diameter to the nearest 1/16" to order the correct size.

Most modern banjos use an 11"-diameter head. Modern makers of "old-time" open-back banjos usually use 11" (and sometimes 12") heads. Vintage banjos, however, may have a range of rim diameters from 10" to 12".

Choose the correct crown height
Crown height is the vertical distance from the top of the head's mounting band to the top surface of the head. A banjo with a flathead tone ring (or a flat-topped banjo) requires a medium or high crown head. A banjo with an archtop tone ring requires a low crown head. The correct crown height prevents the banjo's tension hoop from pulling down too far, and ensures the hoop won't be so high as to impede the strings.

Better than the original

A great Skin Head for this banjo repair. The eighty year old original was pretty nice but had a small puncture and the new head was easy to install, better looking and sounds really nice.

High Quality

This was a high quality banjo head with even thickness and no flaws. I mounted it to a replica 1850s banjo with a 12" rim and it sounds great. I ordered another skin to mount on another banjo I am making.

I have an old Dixie cast metal banjo uke that needed the head replaced. I watched the Stew-Mac video and easily installed the new head. Worked out great !

Variations extreme

I’m fixing a old inexpensive banjo for a friend so I thought I go the extra mile and put a real skin on it. The install went perfectly. My only problem is the variation in color and texture. There are sections that are translucent and othe areas that are white. It’s quite functional, but for almost $30 it should have a better appearance.

Skinned that Banjo

Had to to the stretch it myself skin as no premade skin would fit correctly. This worked well and was fairly easy after watching videos. You just have to make sure you stretch it enough to begin with so that the tension band does not have to be pulled down too far.

i like the thin skins that I get from Stewmac. I stain them with coffee grounds to get a 100 year old patina

The real deal

With the install guidance included I managed to restore a 60's bakelite model after the original skin had completely deteriorated in Florida' challenging conditions for organic materials. The size provided was more than ample for the job, and the thickness and finish are like the original. Sounds better than ever!

Success!

This was my first time restoring an old time banjo and it took three tries to figure out that I needed a skin banjo head . Stewart-MacDonald was very kind to forgive the shipping on the third shipment. The head went on well. I also had to order all the nuts and fasteners, the bone nut, bridge and strings. The parts all came quickly, were good quality and the banjo went together nicely. I'll be doing a couple more string instrument restorations and will definitely order from again. Wish I had taken a photo. I may add it later.
