Details

Patented nearly a century ago, the Kershner is still one of the most popular adjustable-tension tailpieces for banjo.

Length, weight and machined brass construction enhance note sustain and contribute to clear, bright tone. Front-edge notches make string changing easy.

Highly polished and nickel plated. Attachment bolt and hex nut included. Works for 5-string or 4-string banjos.

Installation note: Like many traditional tailpiece designs, the Kershner is held in place by string tension and its attachment bolt. The tailpiece tension screw adjusts string pressure over the bridge for tonal variations. Two screws near the bottom of the tailpiece adjust side-to-side alignment of the strings when needed.

Game changer

By Kirk Lawler from Richland Center, WI

This heavy-duty tailpiece was used to replace the feather-weight stock model on an entry-level Recording King OT-25. More than any other adjustment or mod made to this instrument, the benefit of having a Kershner was immediately apparent; with clearly improved note separation, chiming trebles and increased volume. These tailpieces may seem a little expensive, but are a bargain for what they deliver.

Money Well Spent!

My tailpiece arrived quickly and was packaged well. The quality of both the hardware and plating is top notch! This is a very well designed tailpiece. The only negative thing about switching over to this tailpiece was that it took some slight modification to my banjo to get it to mount correctly. This had nothing to do with the tailpiece, but had to do with my cheap Asian, no tone-ring banjo. Even so, the modifications only took about 15 minutes. Once I mounted the Kershner...I was extremely pleased with the tone & adjustablilty. It's been on for about 2 months now and I still love it with no complaints! Stew-Mac also had the best price I could find...money well spent!!

Wow.

This is a great tailpiece, almost too good for the old tenor banjo I put it on. Solid, well-made, everything functioned properly. Could have maybe used a brief instruction sheet explaining what some of the extra screws were for, but hey, I figured it out. Nice item, and I may get another for a 5-string I'm rebuilding.

Kershner Banjo Tailpiece

I originally purchased this for my Baldwin Ode, but I'd either have to modify the tailpiece or my flange for it to fit and didn't want to do either. I started to send it back, but my son has a low end banjo that has a really washed-out hollow sound, so we tried the Kershner tailpiece and the sound was significantly better. It's amazing how much the sound improved from just this tailpiece addition.

Money well spent. High quality Kershner. This was a big improvement over the stock clamshell tailpiece that came with my B-16. I needed a slight lateral adjustment of the strings that was easily accomplished with the two screws at the bottom edge of the Kershner.I would recommend this tailpiece to anyone looking for a well made, adjustable Kershner tailpiece.

This tail piece is solid! It is better built than I expected and really "sets the tone" for the overall quality of the instrument. Thanks StewMac!

The real thing!

The Kershner tail piece is an excellent product! It's the real thing. I have been using them for years. I recently purchased a new banjo and it didn't have the Kershner tail piece so I ordered one from Stewart - MacDonald. These tail pieces are the only way to fly if you are looking for a strongly built tail piece that will stand the pressure and place your strings where ever you want them and hold them there securely end evenly. I like my strings quite close to the head and these tail pieces are the best ones I've found to do the job and still have a tail piece that looks nice and rugged at the same time. As for Stewart-MacDonald, Their service is second to none! Polite & prompt! A very satisfied customer - Bob Jones, Grafton, N.B. Canada.

I have an Orpheum No 2. Banjo. I think I may have the only one in the world as I can't find anyone else with one. It was a gift. Once I went through it and finished the work that should have been done at the factory I found it to be quite nice. After a recent fret job I took a look at the tailpiece. Cheap, stamped thin metal.
After installing this tailpiece I was blown away by the change. The lower strings were louder and bassier and the high strings were a little less tinny. Overall the mix was much better between all of them. And.. not sure if it is my mind playing tricks or just expectations .. but the banjo is indeed louder. I wish I had done this sooner. Oh.. yeah.. And Stewmac's price was much lower than anywhere else.
