Elite Banjo Heads

About This Item

The look of calfskin, without shrinkage.
Original Elite head has bonded textured surface and a deep warm sound.

Elite banjo heads feature a modern material with the feel and appearance of calfskin, for a warm old-time sound. They're a popular and practical alternative: no shrinkage or stretching due to humidity.

11" high crown.

Choosing the right size banjo head
Measure your banjo for the correct head diameter
Your banjo's rim may be slightly out of round, so take at least three diameter measurements at different points on the outside of the banjo's tone ring or rim top. Use the average diameter to the nearest 1/16" to order the correct size.

Most modern banjos use an 11"-diameter head. Modern makers of "old-time" open-back banjos usually use 11" (and sometimes 12") heads. Vintage banjos, however, may have a range of rim diameters from 10" to 12".

Choose the correct crown height
Crown height is the vertical distance from the top of the head's mounting band to the top surface of the head. A banjo with a flathead tone ring (or a flat-topped banjo) requires a medium or high crown head. A banjo with an archtop tone ring requires a low crown head. The correct crown height prevents the banjo's tension hoop from pulling down too far, and ensures the hoop won't be so high as to impede the strings.

5 Star banjo head

(Customer's Reviews)

Very nice quality head. Unfortunately the rim is wider than my original and the bracket hooks will not fit around the rim to attach to the rim of the tension hoop!

wonderful sound on my epiphany banjo.

(Customer's Reviews)

Had to have a new banjo head and this one sounds great

Good replacement head

(Customer's Reviews)

Wasn't overly happy with the tone from the Remo Renaissance Head that came with my openback banjo as I wanted a more of a mellow, "thunky", "old time sound"...don't ask me just what exactly that sound is... but I know it when I hear it. Anyhow, I tried a Remo Fiberskyn head which was a slight improvement...getting closer. So, I once again switched to this Elite head. Although not perfect, it is the best so far. Now my banjo has a much more mellow sound without the "twang" that oftentimes is present in a bluegrass-type resonator banjo and even some openbacks.

Warmed it right up!

(Customer's Reviews)

Warmed it up, great tone and looks great. I get a lot of compliments!

A very reliable head ...

(Customer's Reviews)

I use loads of these Elite Fibreskyn heads on "old-time" banjos - they make a great sound on budget banjos with thinner rims, cutting the thin "edge" that such banjos often have and "warming-up" the sound.

Not perhaps the head for the finer banjos but many of my customers can't afford them - they just want the best sound they can get from their budget puchase.
