About This Item

PRE-HOLIDAY SALE
$100 Off + FREE Tuners with every Acoustic Guitar Kit
Limited time offer ends October 31, 2017 at 4:00PM ET
Torrefied tops now available!
Build a great sounding 000-size guitar from AAA-grade tonewoods. Start with the advantage of precision machining from our Ohio shop.

  • Carved mahogany neck
  • Accurately bent sides
  • Bookmatched back, joined and cut to shape
  • AAA spruce top with soundhole and rosette channel
  • Slotted fingerboard, ready for frets

Designed with your success in mind
With the kit, you get a lot of help to make sure your guitar turns out great. The full-size blueprint is modeled after a prized vintage Martin, and shows exactly how every part fits. A sturdy cardboard body mold holds the guitar sides in the perfect contour as you build.

The instruction book is really a short course in guitarmaking, by luthiers Todd Sams and Dan Erlewine; no other kit has anything like it. Todd and Dan made the step-by-step DVD that's included with the kit, too (over $40 value). From start to finish, these guitarmakers guide you to a successful build.

You don't need a big shop
We've done the critical machining, so the neck joint and other parts fit well right from the start.

A slotted bone nut and shaped bone saddle are included, along with inlays, bindings and our two-way Hot Rod truss rod. (We know that tuning machines are something you'll prefer to choose for yourself.)

New torrefied spruce option
Choose a torrefied spruce top for the stability, tone and look of well-aged vintage wood. This high-temperature, low-oxygen kiln drying improves the wood, similar to decades of natural aging.

    Included in our kits:
  • Solid AAA tonewoods: spruce, rosewood and mahogany
  • Precisely machined neck joint at the 12-fret, dovetail or bolt-on
  • Bridge pins, end pin, frets, bindings, rosette and trim
  • Hot Rod two-way adjustable truss rod
  • Precut heavy cardboard moldsĀ for trouble-free body assembly
  • Full-size blueprint and bracing template
  • Illustrated 36-page spiral-bound instruction book
  • Step-by-step DVD: Building an Acoustic Guitar Kit

Love these kits

I'm a hobby builder and this is my 26th guitar. I've bent sides, carved necks, cut fret slots, and done it all. Once you've done it a few times you have decide if the goal is making a guitar or making sawdust. Either is fine, but this kit comes with 90% of the stuff I don't like to do already done, and it's done to a high caliber. The process is all that much more enjoyable and there's nothing about this kit that keeps you from building a super premium instrument.

Good Product, Excellent Service.

I Like this kit. I built another kit many years ago from another company and I will say this is a much more well thought out kit. It is a good method for building a nice guitar, given a reasonable level of skill. There are some things that could be a little more well thought out as far as assembly.

I liked the idea of not having to use an external mold. In practice I found the cardboard inner form and the clamp did not work for me. I was unable to close the gap at the waist to the required dimension. It would have worked fine had I bent the sides to fit the form but as the sides had been pre-bent for who knows how long, they were much too stiff. Another problem was that the sides had splits on the neck block ends. I repaired these but when I saw the form would not work I thought I would call your tech support.

I talked with Aaron in tech support and he sent me a different set of sides as well as blocks. I sure appreciated his help and prompt attention. In the meantime I built an external mold which solved the problem.

Overall the quality of the kit is good. The materials seem to be good quality. Other than the design issue I am satisfied with the kit and would recommend it for a first time build.

Once again I thought the service was excellent. It arrived quickly and was well packaged.

Thanks,

Terry

000 kit

The guitar turned out well considering my woodworking skills, and it sounds pretty amazing. A luthier I know was willing to lend me spool clamps and let me use his jig for routing the binding and purfling, as well as offering expertise when I ran into difficulties. I used a french polish instead of lacquer to finish the guitar, and I'm happy with the results. After the french polish, the torrified top looks like vintage patina--beautiful honey-yellow.

A couple of small complaints: The dreadnought kit comes with bracing already cut and shaped, but not the triple-0, which strikes me as somewhat unfair. The X-bracing had to be shaped and scalloped by hand, and the back braces I received were sized for the dreadnought and had to be trimmed in length and then tapered by hand. Not a deal-breaker, but an annoying delay while I figured out how to do those tasks.

I ran into a couple of concerns with the dovetail neck. The base of the"V" of the dovetail's mortise didn't fit all the way back in the tenon of the neck block, and while several people eventually told me that this was common in guitar construction, a mention of that in the instructions and/or video would have been useful. Also, the "tongue" of the tenon required quite a bit of shaving back (more than 1/4 inch) so that it wouldn't hit the neck block as I fitted the neck to the body. Knowing in advance that it might be needed would have been good so that I wouldn't have had to worry about hitting a chisel or saw blade against the truss rod collar as I shaved down the "tongue."

The customer-support was excellent, easing concerns and providing instruction/confirmation on how I was proceeding. I was lamenting the fact that one of the fretboard diamonds was off-center, and the technician said I would be able to forgive myself for that, which was a comfort. I'm still annoyed that I screwed that up, but I can indeed forgive myself for it when I look at the totality of the instrument.

I submitted the instrument for the Staff/Faculty Art & Craft show at the college where I work, titled "Guitar--some assembly required."

Got my Guitar kit from this amazing company. I had a few problems assembling it when I first started. I expressed this to them and, not expecting anything, they shipped me some replacement parts at no charge. Blew me away. In my humble opinion it is hard to find a company, any company that provides the level of service these folks do....just amazing...whatever you purchase from these folks I know in my heart you will be happy...Thank you to you all. Nicely done!

Quality Kit

.Just received this kit and I will say I was impressed. I have built three guitars from scratch throughout the years and can really appreciate having the sweat work already done for me. I am now free to concentrate on the aesthetics of the instrument. Kit included a flawless spruce top, beautiful rosewood back and sides, one-piece mahogany neck, and ebony fingerboard/headplate. The top and back bracing is precisely machined straight-grained spruce ready for gluing and tapering. I am confident this kit will produce a quality instrument. Save time and money. Thanks StewMac for a flawless product.

The kit came very well packed and everything is there. I did not like the color of the IR finger board which is very pink in color compared to the bridge which is a nice reddish brown. Also the Indian Rosewood sides do not match the back and the back has a washed-out patch covering 1 third of the tail of the board. The neck end of the back is a dark brown color and just past the waist there is a v that forms to the tail block that is very yellow. I don't know what the finished guitar will look like. I will try to pore fill with a black filler. This may help. The guitar kit was Back-order one month so I decided to keep it as is and not ask for replacement.

MUCH better than some others

This is my second build. My first was from a very well known company that has been making instruments a long time and strays with the letter following L. The quality of the components in this kit is MUCH better! The fingerboard has character, the top is close grained and the back looks cool! I can't wait to get started making this incredible quality instrument. If you're up in the air about building a kit and can't decide which one..... my vote is for the one from Stewmac! Happy building!

Very educational building a guitar from this kit - and the video and instruction manual are great guides plus tech support from Stew Mac make it like an apprenticeship. Not going to say it's easy - but it is certainly rewarding.

A Late Review....

I bought this kit in 2005. I built it on the closed-in porch of my apartment in Washington DC with limited tools. As a first timer I made mistakes, but overall my finished product looked pretty good and played very well. Over the years, it's sound has gotten better and better. It's my favorite guitar to play. If you are curious and want to try building a guitar for yourself, I encourage you to try this kit. You'll make mistakes, but learn so much. And you'll finish with a nice playing instrument.
