Fret Puller

About This Item

This tool is just for pulling, not cutting, frets. Its spring-loaded flush-ground 1/2" jaws are small enough for a better bite.

It helps reduce wood chip-out, and does a better job of getting under frets and lifting them than wider cutters. Comfortable rubber-coated handles.

Chip-free fret jobs: try the Fret Puller with our Chip Stoppers, and forever change the way you remove frets.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Well made

High carbon hard stainless steel appears to have been used in forging these "Fret Puller" vertical cutters, and the tips of both jaws have been further ground down to a flat, sharp, acute "v" so that they can get under fret wire, even those that have been lacquered over or covered with urethane, such as various mid-70's Fenders with "full" maple necks and later "vintage copies." Unless you want to grind a pair yourself (and the tolerances are very close to .008 +/- .001 across the jaws) a pair of these will set you back over thirty dollars elsewhere. These are not your ordinary off-the-shelf vertical pliers; these have been re-shaped just for pulling fret wire gently and safely out of even the toughest necks. I've used these on a half dozen instruments now in conjunction with the "chip stopper plates" (also sold here at Stew Mac) with both a small heat gun and a wide tip 30W iron; the results are astoundingly smooth and consistent- even with vintage neck through instruments and one delicate 1940's Gibson LG-1 ladder braced flat top acoustic. Five Stars. Thanks

Handy, easy, effective

Does what it says, with no hassle. A bit loose tension retainer, and for some reason, i have marked a favorite side that seems to work better on that initial edge pull...

This little rascal is a pleasure to work with! You can actually "walk" the fret out of the slot in practically no time or effort!

PERFECT!!!

I used these pullers on a VERY vintage and fragile fretboard. The frets were filed almost flat, but this little gem snuck them out with very little chip out!!! A specialty tool for a specialty job!!!

Good but not perfect

5 stars for design. The spring loaded handles makes "walking" the fret out in small steps a breeze. 3 stars for quality and execution. The jaws are not ground quite flat or sharp enough. It's difficult to get them into under the ends for the initial pulling action. The edges wore noticeably after one use. I am a long time Stew-Mac customer in the process of replacing or upgrading many 10-15 year old tools. It seems like more bells and whistles and less build quality is unfortunately a recurring theme compared to the older tools.
