Fret/Fingerboard Levelers

About This Item

Precision-ground for flatness.
Fast, accurate leveling tools for the pro shop.

Each heavyweight rectangular 1" x 2" steel tube is precision-ground for flatness on the narrow sides. Attach abrasive to quickly level frets or level an unfretted fingerboard. The tool's edges are smooth to prevent gouging.

Available in three lengths, to level any fingerboard.

Roger Sadowsky, ace builder and repairman, wrote us to say:
"I have been leveling fingerboards and frets for 30 years and thought I was pretty set in my ways. However, I have recently tried the 16" steel levelers (#4578) and man, talk about teaching an old dog new tricks! My fingerboards have never been better, and they work much better than files for leveling frets. Thank you again, StewMac!!!"

Cut and stick!
3M Stikit Gold Paper Self-adhesive Abrasives are the right width for our leveling and radius sanding tools. Attach 80 through 220-grits for radiusing and leveling the fingerboard, and 220 through 400-grits for leveling the frets.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

More uses than just leveling frets!

By

I bought this a few years ago for fret jobs and have leveled quite a few fret boards with this beam. Heavy duty as hell and the weight does the work for you. When I got into constructing bodies, I learned about the challenges of surface leveling after you join your wood and thickness plane it. Body blanks have to be completely flat and true in order to produce the most desirable finish. A drum sander would solve this issue for most but who has a grand laying around? Enter the leveling beam. I use the adhesive sand paper on the wide sides to level out my blanks before I start my routes and shaping. Back and forth with the grains until the pencil scribble has disappeared. Has been a tremendous help for me and takes the guess work out of leveling my blanks. Invaluable tool.

Sweet Precision

I must admit, I was tempted to try to find a cheaper solution on Ebay. After looking at left over junk from someone's metal shop I had an epiphany, Now is not a good time to clown around. Precision work demands precision tools. This thing is so sweet I shed a small tear the moment I held it.

Not cheap - but worth it

This is a very nice quality sanding beam. I hesitated to buy it at first because of the price, but I'm not sorry I bought it. (bought the 16") It is very sturdy and heavy gage stainless steel and it appears to be precision ground on a surface grinder (on both sides). I also like the heavily chamfered ends. That's a nice touch and will prevent some issues from happening when leveling frets. If you're looking at one of these, just do it. It's not cheap, but it's very high quality and it will last forever.

This is what you need for a perfect fretjob!

it's very easy to work with, it's very accurate and the weight of a beam is perfect. 24'' length is best for basses but also good for guitars so if you want to have only one beam for everything this is the best choice!

Works great

I got the 16" and the 24" years ago. I found I use the 24" on guitars as well as bass's. It hits the ends of the fingerboard at the same time and takes care of the ramping that happens at the end of some fingerboards. I use them everyday.
