Fretting Hammer

About This Item

Our well-balanced dual-face hammer has become a standard tool for fretwork.

The aluminum head is threaded for two replaceable striking surfaces: a low-dent plastic flat face with smooth edges, and a brass convex face that's radiused for installing frets. Sturdy hardwood handle.

Head striking surface diameter 7/8" (22.23mm)
Overall length of the head 2-3/4" (69.85mm)
Handle length 9-1/2" (241.30mm)

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Bang For Your Buck (Euros in my case)!

I received a defective hammer (brass head was threaded in at a slight angle), i was happy enough with it as it didn't necessarily affect it's function, so i gave it a 4 out of 5 review, but thanks to StewMacs superb customer service, they read my review and noted this and they immediately shipped me a new hammer. Very happy with the hammer, it's very decent quality, and feels nice in the hand, and also very happy with the quality of customer service, best i'v experienced! A+++

Not just a fretting hammer

Its perfect for fretting with the brass end but I use the plastic end all the time for tapping things loose on delicate parts. Its not a framing hammer so don't expect that. Its small, but works great. And you can replace the faces since they screw out. One tip: pull the faces off as soon as you get it and wrap them a time or two with teflon tape then screw them back in. This will keep the faces from rattling loose during use.

This may just seem like any hammer you may buy some other place. But believe me this is the fret hammer you need. It is just the right size and weight and design. Larry Threet, Luthier, Lexington SC

A comfortable fret hammer

After having this hammer for several years I received a gift of a fret hammer from another supplier. I tried the new hammer once and came back to this one. It is just the right size for me and I love that StewMac offers replacement faces. The head has gotten loose and needed attention a couple of times but it is still hands down my favorite fret hammer.

For good job on fret board, this version is more better than the new version, because the two sides are replaced.

Perfect size and weight for my liking. I like the plastic face better than the brass one
