ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

About This Item

The easiest way to spray a professional finish!
Produces a beautiful traditional nitrocellulose lacquer finish, without elaborate spray equipment.

ColorTone® Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable finish that enhances the beauty of the wood.

Available in convenient 13-ounce spray cans.

ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface.

How many cans do you need?

  • Electric guitar neck: No sealer, 2 to 3 cans lacquer
  • Solid body electric: 1 can sealer, 3 to 4 cans lacquer
  • Acoustic or archtop guitar: 1 can sealer, 4 to 6 cans lacquer
  • Mandolin or dulcimer: 1 can sealer, 3 to 4 cans lacquer
  • Banjo rim and neck: 1 can sealer, 3 to 4 cans lacquer
  • Ukulele: 1 can sealer, 2 to 3 cans lacquer

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

Clear Satin typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Application Tips

We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

By

This is a high quality product. I used it to finish a wood stock on an old shotgun. The key to getting a factory new finish is to follow directions and read the tips provided by Stewart-MacDonald experts. I was very pleased with the results. As with any project, patience is important. Letting your lacquer dry a little longer is better than not enough. Don't be tempted to rush to the end. This lacquer is excellent and can give results you will be proud of.

A Big Part of My Everyday Projects!

I love working with this finish to produce different designs that help hide repairs and make my recycled builds one-of-a-kind. This aerosol can saves me prep and clean-up time, freeing my creative flow of interruptions. Sure, I have had a can that wouldn't spray, BUT StewMac sent me a new one right away, which worked perfectly- they went the extra mile so that my workload wasn't interrupted. Good product, great supplier... can't beat it! (Love the universal spray handle, too!)

I got the clear so I wouldn't have to set up the compressor and spray gun for small jobs. Great finish but the worst smelling lacquer I've ever used.

I have tried other aerosol brands and this one is the best. Goes on smoothly, blends/melts really well with previous coats, very forgiving. Polishes up nicely! Highly recommend!

pro shop finish in a can

This aerosol lacquer has worked great for me. Just spray on thin coats.. let it dry for a day or so and then wet sand, do this several times. Let final coat dry for a few weeks wet sand again.. and buff it out and it comes to life and looks great. I think my Gibson LP finish looks better now than the original finish..

Two custom hollow body guitars I made using StewMac ColorTone aerosol lacquer products (sanding sealer, and clear gloss). Both were a pleasure to work with and gave the kind of results I was after. Thanks StewMac!
