Product Details

Spectacular sunbursts, vintage tints and head-turning modern colors: ColorTone concentrated stains mix with virtually any finish, and are formulated specifically for luthiers.

They're accurate and authentic stringed instrument colors, as researched and specified by our own guitar finishing experts—not the generic furniture colors you'll find at other suppliers.

These concentrated grain-enhancing stains are economical; a little goes a long way. Reduce them with alcohol or water to give bare wood beautiful fade-resistant color, without hiding the grain. They're versatile, too. For applying transparent color-tinted coats, ColorTone stains can be mixed directly into virtually any finish: nitrocellulose lacquer, shellac, waterbase finishes, and catalyzed varnishes or lacquers.

Available in 2-ounce bottles, in the most popular stringed instrument colors. SAVE when you order the set of all ten!

Make wood grain come alive!
ColorTone liquid stains are lightfast metal-complex dyes that can be mixed for practically any desired intensity. Unlike off-the-shelf hardware store stains, they're formulated for guitar finishing. One 2-ounce bottle makes two quarts of stain at normal concentration. Because they're liquids, they can be measured precisely for critical color matching—a plus for refinishing and touchup work. (See our handy stain mixing cups and pipettes.)

Solid and nice colors

Les Paul flame top refinish

By Matt S. from Desoto, Tx
(Customer's Reviews) Thursday, May 02, 2013

wine red les paul stolen a few years back. Got replacement - color just wasn't right but nice flame - too orange. I carefully stripped the finish on a wing and a prayer and salvaged my trim without too much damage. I wanted a wine red with a little cherry. Did not want the black counterstain like Gibson does. So I counterstained the flames with red mahogany. Then it was a matter of mixing cherry red and red mahogany until I got the red I wanted. By the way, the maple seemed to take up the darker more readily and nothing else worked like these Stew-Mac stains. I even did a "candy coat" stained clear coat sandwiched between multiple clear coats, which I'm sure is unethical. But the whole thing came out great ... to my surprise. Except the extra clear coats I put on ruined the tone...NO!! only kidding it still sings. Had to doctor my trim in few spots... This whole job was a ton of work. No more Les PAuL REFINS for me. Thanks Stew-Mac...its done...

Color Tone Liquid Stain

By Gary Mosca from Thomasville, PA
(Customer's Reviews) Wednesday, April 24, 2013

I purchased the Color Tone Liguid Stain in the Amber and was very excited to use it but wasn't sure how to proceed. I went to my local hardware store and they were really helpful. When they saw the intensity of the color (just a drop in a cup of denatured alcohol) they couldn't believe it.
I've since applied the stain onto a vintage Telecaster body and the color is outstanding. Thanks StewMac. Another great product.

Works great in lacquer and shellac. Translucent colors are smooth and even. Black works great to dye voilin and bass fingerboards.

Excellent color consistency from batch to batch makes for low risk when replicating a specific color combination.

Orange stain

I recently did a gretsch / tele hybrid modeled after a fender gretsch-o-tele. Dead on Gretsch orange color. Looked great on a curly maple top with a mahogany base.
