CTS Control Pots

About This Item

CTS pots have long been the first choice in American guitars. CTS pots from StewMac have even more to like: closer tolerances and longer life!

We've specified these CTS pots to feature a longer-life brass shaft and tighter ±10% resistance tolerance compared to CTS products offered by most other suppliers.

CTS precision audio taper gives you smoother and more accurate response than you'll get with economy pots. Crank your guitar up to 10 and the volume swells all the way—no abrupt flattening to choke your playing style.

Available with split shaft for fine-knurled (24-spline) knob, or with smooth shaft to fit a set-screw knob. A long-shaft 500K-ohm version fits Les Paul style carved-top solidbodies.

Each CTS pot includes a flat washer, lock washer, and two hex mounting nuts for custom height adjustment on a pickguard or control plate.

Which pot value should you choose?
500K pots are standard controls for humbuckers, and 250Ks are usually used for single-coil pickups. A 250K gives a slightly warmer tone than a 500K, and bleeds off (attenuates) some of the high frequencies to ground.

Replacement Mounting Nuts and Lock Washers are also available.

Used on all of my projects

These are great pots, such a tight tolerance. I've never yet come across a bad pot.

Good reproduction of vintage CTS

Pot looks and works like vintage OEM, even has a brass stem.

very well built

great quality, and I like the resistance it has to turning, just right! The taper isn't right for me however. Maybe it's got to do with my particular guitar, but it loses volume too dramatically right when you start turning it down. I'd prefer something more gradual (the previous volume pot which went scratchy was better).

Exactly what I was looking for.

I ordered these to replace an Alpha volume pot in a Epiphone SG. The CTS is much more linear so mission accomplished.

Volume pot upgrade

Replaced a factory volume pot in my made in Japan Squire P bass. It gave it a better, clearer sound. You can't beat CTS for quality.

CTS Control Pots

Phoned in the order, and the assistant was friendly, knowledgable, and the customer service was outstanding. The parts shipped lickety split and there was no issue having them sent to my guitar tech. I will use Stewart-MacDonald again, and again. Oustanding!

Dropped right into my CIJ '50s Strat.

I ordered three of these pots (and CRL 5 way switch) to replace the original aging mini pots in my "Crafted in Japan" '50's Strat from 1997. I specifically used the standard split shaft, 250k ohm pots. The original pots and 5 way switch had become intermittent due to corrosion. I was concerned that I would run into problems, such as having to widen the holes in the pickguard, or to have to buy new knobs when upgrading to the full sized CTS pots. My concerns were unnecessary. The three new pots fit perfectly into the pre-existing holes in the vintage style single ply 8 screw pickguard, and there was plenty of room internally to hook everything up. I used the diagram included with the CRL 5 way switch and I was back in business in less than an hour The guitar sounds great. I put up with the old noisy and broken parts for far too long!

Good but...

I really thought the volume increase/dicrease in a more progressive way. But this pots unfortunatelly "jump" to max at the end of the roll.

Good quality pots. Love these for my tone pots, and the Emerson CTS pots for Volume, as the Emersons are a much lower friction pot.

CTS Pots

I just built a Strat from a parts-bin body with ceramic magnet pickups (front didn't work, tone control did nothing - one pot pooched, the other 2 were 500's - pups measured 5.94, 6.2 and 5.94, with the middle one having a blue hot wire... if anybody knows what these are...)

After re-wiring with CTS (plus one alpha- needed a push pull for "Gilmour" mod), everything works. The pots are solid-feeling and smooth, with just the right amount of resistance to turning. Audio taper is clean and linear.

I can't believe the sound quality that you can get with great components, even with pickups that shouldn't sound better than Gold Lace sensors!!!
