Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers

Straight-up raw vintage! Closely modeled after an outstanding vintage P.A.F. set from our own collection. That sweet tone was just too good to keep to ourselves!

True vintage sound.
We christened these exceptional humbuckers in tribute to the famous Kalamazoo address where the holy grail of pickups, the legendary P.A.F. (Patent Applied For), was born.

Just like the originals, the slug coil has more windings than the polepiece coil, and both coils are unpotted. Old P.A.F.s weren't made in separate neck and bridge-position models, and their DC resistance varied from 7-9K ohms. We give you a choice: Parsons Street neck-position pickups are wound to mid 7K, and bridge-position models to low 8K.

Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers sweet vintage tone was crafted to vintage P.A.F. specifications:
• Nickel-silver cover for tone transparency
• Original 1.97" (50.04mm) polepiece spacing
• Plain enameled AWG42 coil wire
• Black paper coil tape
• Wood spacer
• Choice of Alnico 2 or Alnico 5 magnet
• Nickel-silver baseplate
• Single-conductor braided shield output wire

Your choice of original-style magnets:
• Alnico 2 for warm tone with smooth highs and a soft bottom response.
• Alnico 5 produces a clear tone with more pronounced highs and a tighter low end.
(Original P.A.F.s contained Alnico 2, 3 and 5 magnets at various times.)

Neck models: mid 7K ohms
Bridge models: low 8K ohms

Trade Secrets!

Swapping pickup covers on a rare lefty Lucille

Making new pickups look old: Brand new pickups looked too shiny in this guitar that had seen a lot of gigs. So Dan Erlewine opened the old pickup and put its cover on the new one. This meant cutting the solder joint and resoldering.

Wiring a humbucker to get two sounds

Erick Coleman shows how he modified a Parsons Street Humbucker, turning it into a switchable single-coil/humbucker combination.

Excellent upgrade!

Bang for the $$!
Installed a set of these in my '74 SG, Alnico 5 in neck and Alnico 2 in bridge. Rich, woody sound, and sweet without having to crank the amp all the way!
Having tried out quite a lot of pups, I have to say these measure up to the best!

Very Happy

I am no Pro by any means. I built this Les Paul copy, my first scratch build. I took over a year to finish. I put the Alnico 2 in the neck and Alnico 5 at the bridge. The sound is amazing to me. I have more guitars than I would like to admit, but these are my favorite. These pickups are worth twice what I paid and I have some Gibsons I paid nearly 3 times as much. I would buy these again in a heartbeat.

Great pickups at a reasonable price

I removed a matched set of DiMarzio humbuckers, and replaced them with Alnico 2 neck and Alnico 5 bridge Golden Age Parsons Street humbuckers. I found the vintage '59 sound that I had been looking foe, without the big price tag of Gibsons.

If you like the bark of a humbucker, with mellow undertones, then you should try these.

Great Value

Nice to be able to order with choice of magnets. For a 335/Dot it would be handy to have another 20 mm of lead on the neck pick up. After chasing "HOT" pick ups, I am realizing it's low resistance sound is what I am looking for.

Parsons St; Al 2 neck, Al 5 Bridge

By

It's been an adventure getting these pickups, delivery was about 9 weeks(via Sweden for unknown reasons) but StewMac sent a replacement and both packages arrived within days of each other.
Anyway, this is a product review isn't it?
The Golden Age pickups were very sensibly packaged; (Gibson, Lollar etc, take note: big expensive perspex packaging does not make a better product!) I wired them up using CTS pots and Orange Drop caps. However, I did a "Peter Green" mod to the neck pickup. ie, I reversed the polarity of the magnet and also installed the pickup round the other way (the poles facing the bridge) to get the out-of-phase sound with both pickups selected. This is easily done with the unpotted pickups, and I got exactly the sound I was after. I do find the bridge pickup to be slightly quieter but that should be solved by adjusting the heights of both pups. In any event since I've modded one pup I can surely expect a shift in the output it produces.
So am I happy with the pickups? Absolutely and, dare I say it, worth the wait! I will use them in the next humbucker powered build. I did send back the replacement package!!!

Pretty Authentic

These pickups have an amazing tone. I got my bridge a little hotter than the average, just like Jimmy Page's configuration. I play a lot of Zeppelin and you need great PAF pickups to acquire the tone. These do the job. Stew Mac went to great lengths to replicate a PAF, maple spacers, long magnet, unpotted, etc.

I've been watching these since the price was lower. I sucks that it is higher now but still a very good product.

Really accurate PAF tone!

Boutique Quality / Half The Price

I purchased a cosmetically challenged late 90's Korean (Samick) Epi LP to restore. First off, I was impressed with the build quality of the guitar so I figured it was worth an upgrade. I looked at all the available PU's and decided to take a flyer on these, Alnico 5 neck - 2 bridge,I'm blown away! I put the money I saved into new pots, caps and wiring and oh yeah the savings partially financed a new set of locking tuners as well.

The LP holds it's own with my buddy's vintage Gibsons and I doubt I'll ever sell it. Don't hesitate to buy these as an upgrade to an newer Epiphone, you won't be disappointed.
