Golden Age Overwound Humbuckers

About This Item

The HOT versions of our classic Golden Age Humbuckers! The same Alnico 5 magnets, but overwound to 12K ohms for high output, powerful midrange and driving tone.

The AWG43 coils are wound on fabric-taped bobbins, mounted on a brass baseplate, and wax-potted for microphonic suppression.

The output wire is 4-conductor plus ground, enabling versatile custom coil-tapping, series/parallel, and phase switching options. 12K ohms. Bridge model polepieces have 2.015" spread; neck models have 1.97" spread. Mounting screws, springs and wiring diagrams included.

Inspired by great guitar pickups of the 50s!

  • Alnico 5 magnets (aluminum/nickel/cobalt) as used in the originals, for classic tone.
  • Vintage dimensions for easy installation in standard pickguards and bodies.
  • Wax-potted for microphonic suppression.
  • Wiring diagrams included with each pickup.

Length: 2.75" (69.85mm)
Width: 1.5" (38.10mm)
Height including mounting tabs, bridge pickup: .840" (21.34mm)

Color-matching Cream Parts and Bindings
There have always been slight variations in the color of the cream plastic parts used on Gibson and other guitars. It's not uncommon to see brand new and vintage guitars with bindings, pickup rings, toggle switch rings and pickguards that don't perfectly match in color. We do our best to match all our cream products, but there's no absolute control from batch to batch, or from supplier to supplier.

Over wound Golden aged pickup

I normally use Rio Grande BBQ humbucker in my bridge spot. But this pick up sounds as good and has a coil tap. Will buy another for my new build I'm working on. Love StewMac.

Killer tone for HSS Strat

By

Verified Buyer

Always wanted to find a right combination for a split coiled bucker in an HSS setup but never felt they sounded this and anemic UNTIL I decided to order one of these Hot buckers from stew mac. The Neck amd middle singles I ordered from Kerry at onamac windery which measured 6.3K ohm, man does my MIM speak with gratifying authority now. I've realized the humbucker in fact needs to be Twice the output of your singles. My single coils were 6.3 amd hot Humbucker read 12.6 which was Exactly double of the singles and man does it sound great now. I wired it master tone, first tone pot I wired to now master tone and 2nd tone pot I changed to a "No Load" Blender pot which allows blend in the neck into bridge in position 1, pos 2 is now split coil from bucker into middle pup. Now also something else that I just love, pos 5 I can have neck only or "Blend" in a little or a lot of bridge into neck. Nicest tone wiring for Strat I've used to date and even better if this stew mac hot bucker for splitting coils. Just remember the bucker needs to be as close to double output to the singles. Tnx SM amd best of luck to anyone who tries this blend pot wiring. Ernie from Canada

Killer humbuckers

I love my Epiphone SG, but the stock pickups always seemed a bit muddy and tired. Saw the overwound Golden Age 'buckers on the StewMac website, ordered a set and received them in three days. Installed them, plugged in, and OMG! The clarity, note definition, liquid sustain, are awesome! Going to put a set in my Epiphone Les Paul next. Excellent pickups and VERY affordable! Thanks StewMac!

Awesome humbucker for a HSS Strat!

The best alternative to classic Duncan JB for a Strat's bridge position with 250K volume pot. Sounds full and clear, not sharp, powerful and with excellent dynamic range.
A blast when combined with GoldenAge single coils, also with splitted coils.
The best choice at this price.
Very good job, StewMac!

Upgraded my epi lespaul with these....sounded good and was able to add coil split. Wire is good gauge vs Duncan (too thin).

Excellent upgrade for my 2015 SG Special

By

Verified Buyer

My 2015 SG Special came with jangly, weak, bright pickups and a PCB with cheap pots. A pair of these hot humbuckers and a complete SG wiring kit has totally transformed the instrument. It sounds every bit as good as my 1997 SG standard now. An $800 guitar now sounds like my $1300 (in 1997 dollars) guitar. I couldn't be happier with the focused, midrange-heavy presence of both pickups in the set.

GA Overwound bridge

By

Verified Buyer

I installed this in the bridge of my Epi ES-339 along with a regular GA A5 in the neck. [see the separate review of the A5 neck]
The overwound bridge pup sounds like a balanced & beefy SD JB with less proprietary noise.
It's the perfect "kick it up" pup when used in concert with the regular neck GA A5. Pinch harmonics fly from this pup. Turned down just a bit (with a treble bleed R/C circuit on the volume pot) and it sounds like a Ric with balls or a fuller sounding Filtertron. It's extremely versatile.
As a 40+ year working pro guitar technician, I highly recommend these.

As a personal note... reviewers who favorably compare these pups with Gibson Burstbuckers or 57 Classics should probably have their hearing checked. These outclass ALL of Gibson's overrated, muddy & grossly overpriced pups. The closest comparison I can make is to Lo**ar Imperials. Now THAT'S a compliment!

Killer tone in bridge position

By

Verified Buyer

I put the F spaced bridge model in my strat. It measured 11.97k ohm. Sounds fantastic with distortion and overdrive. I have some brand name signature pickups from 80s rock heros such as JS and other famous players who used closely related humbucker pickups. IMO, this humbucker doesn't give anything up to the big brand products. The clean tone is more aimed toward clarity and modern tone rather than vintage tone. Harmonics are very easy, but the tone is not compressed or too mid heavy, so its very versatile. I used 375k Volume pot, 250k Tone pot, and 0.027uF cap. I used similar values with the famous brand name 80s pickups. I get a lot of harmonics with this pickup.
