Golden Age Overwound Humbuckers

About This Item

The overwound versions of our classic Golden Age Humbuckers! The same Alnico 5 magnets, but overwound to 12K ohms for high output, powerful midrange and driving tone.

The AWG43 coils are wound on fabric-taped bobbins, mounted on a brass baseplate, and wax-potted for microphonic suppression.

The output wire is 4-conductor plus ground, enabling versatile custom coil-tapping, series/parallel, and phase switching options. 12K ohms. Bridge model polepieces have 2.015" spread; neck models have 1.97" spread. Mounting screws, springs and wiring diagrams included.

Inspired by great guitar pickups of the 50s!

  • Alnico 5 magnets (aluminum/nickel/cobalt) as used in the originals, for classic tone.
  • Vintage dimensions for easy installation in standard pickguards and bodies.
  • Wax-potted for microphonic suppression.
  • Wiring diagrams included with each pickup.

Length: 2.75" (69.85mm)
Width: 1.5" (38.10mm)
Height including mounting tabs, bridge pickup: .840" (21.34mm)

Color-matching Cream Parts and Bindings
There have always been slight variations in the color of the cream plastic parts used on Gibson and other guitars. It's not uncommon to see brand new and vintage guitars with bindings, pickup rings, toggle switch rings and pickguards that don't perfectly match in color. We do our best to match all our cream products, but there's no absolute control from batch to batch, or from supplier to supplier.

Really great tone

By

Verified Buyer

Several years ago I bought two Agile Les Paul guitars. They play great, but the pickups were weak. A couple years ago I upgraded the pickups on one of them with one of the top selling brands of pickups. It is now an AMAZING guitar. So I had my second Agile LP that still needed pickups but I didn't want to spend so much on pickups. So I tried a set of Golden Age Overwounds. I have to say, as a person who used to build PRS pickups back in the 80's, I am VERY impressed with the GAOH pickups! Construction is solid and they look great. The tone is really amazing, way better than the set on my other LP. It's warm, projects well, not peaky, not muddy, not brittle. They're warm and round sounding. I can roll the guitar volume off of the big fat LP overdriven sound to reveal a crisp clear full clean tone. I'll definitely buy another set of these soon. In fact, I may go buy another Agile so I'll have a place to put a new set of these humbuckers. Seriously beautiful tone.

I love these pickups

I have purchased 4 sets of the pickups. The stock Gibsons are crap these pickups are more dynamic. You can spend twice as much for another named brand but when you are on stage and you have a kick ass tone who cares.

My favorite bridge pickup ever..

I love the Golden Age 12k overwound bridge pickup. Nice and crispy without the fizz and chunky enough without robbing the tone. I have had 6 or 7 sets of Golden age pickups and have recommended them to friends who all had good reviews. Excellent product and an amazing price! Thanks Stewmac.

Excellent hot humbucker!!!

Bought the overwound GA for the bridge and the (standard) GA for the neck to upgrade my Michael Kelly Patriot. Sounds awesome, comparable to the JB and 59 combo I have in my les paul. No need to spend more for a brand name, these are every bit as good. Pickup height in relation to the strings will have a huge effect on the frequency response (character), so my advice is to make small, incremental adjustments until you get the sound you want from them.

My tone

I needed a set of pickups for a guitar I was building for myself. The price was unbeatable and the reviews were good so I took the plunge and bought one of these for the bridge and a Golden Age hot single coil for the neck. I'm completely happy with them, exactly the tones I was after. I now fit StewMac pickups as standard in the guitars and basses I build for customers, and they're happy too.

Screws too long for a strat cavity

By

Verified Buyer

Just a word of caution: if you're planning to put one of these pups in a strat, the pickup height screws that are included are too long to allow the pickup to fit in the strat cavity. They are 1 1/4 inch long. You're going to need a 1 inch screw. These screws have extra fine threads, and that means you're probably not going to be able to run right out to the hardware store and find the screws you need. You can do what I did: get out the hack saw. If you go that route, cut the screws after the pickups are already installed in the pickguard, because you'll probably mess up the threads. It would be nice if stewmac sold these screws in 1 inch lengths.

Sounds amazing in my '61 reissue SG custom. Clear distinct voicing with plenty of punch and midrange.

OMG!!!

I recently bought a used Epiphone G310 to "Frankenstein/modify. I don't want to spend a lot of money and decided to try the Golden Age pickup. It is amazing!!! I have owned/own Duncan's and Dimazzio's and they are great pickups, but this one is sooo much better! And at half the price. I bought the hot, chrome,4 wire and a coil tap and I can't put the guitar down. The chrome is beautiful and the sound is fantastic! I will definitely be buying more!

What a value!

By

Verified Buyer

I've always used after market pickups from the big D since the 70's. Never felt I had reason to change... Until or other guitarist who have a limited budget wanted picks in her epiphone LP while her gibson LP was out for new frets. After all the great reviews I read (until I got tired of reading) I knew these were worth a try. I installed using one of the wiring kits and WOW. She is not only happy, she is "so so happy!" thanks StewMac
