Golden Age Overwound Humbuckers

About This Item

The overwound versions of our classic Golden Age Humbuckers! The same Alnico 5 magnets, but overwound to 12K ohms for high output, powerful midrange and driving tone.

The AWG43 coils are wound on fabric-taped bobbins, mounted on a brass baseplate, and wax-potted for microphonic suppression.

The output wire is 4-conductor plus ground, enabling versatile custom coil-tapping, series/parallel, and phase switching options. 12K ohms. Bridge model polepieces have 2.015" spread; neck models have 1.97" spread. Mounting screws, springs and wiring diagrams included.

Inspired by great guitar pickups of the 50s!

  • Alnico 5 magnets (aluminum/nickel/cobalt) as used in the originals, for classic tone.
  • Vintage dimensions for easy installation in standard pickguards and bodies.
  • Wax-potted for microphonic suppression.
  • Wiring diagrams included with each pickup.

Length: 2.75" (69.85mm)
Width: 1.5" (38.10mm)
Height including mounting tabs, bridge pickup: .840" (21.34mm)

Color-matching Cream Parts and Bindings
There have always been slight variations in the color of the cream plastic parts used on Gibson and other guitars. It's not uncommon to see brand new and vintage guitars with bindings, pickup rings, toggle switch rings and pickguards that don't perfectly match in color. We do our best to match all our cream products, but there's no absolute control from batch to batch, or from supplier to supplier.

PAF with a little punch

By

Probably one of the better overwound PAF's out there. Good clean tones and a bottom end. Also great for soloing and they don't get fizzing or shrill when you crank the gain. I replaced the probucker in my Epi pro with this, good results. Also paired this with a GFS '59 neck in another LP with good results.

It's No Hype

I haven't had a pickup I loved since I parted with my 1974 SG way back in college. Since then, I've tried many pickups, from many manufacturers (Dimarzio, Duncan, Carvin, Gibson, EMG, etc.). Some were very good, even great. I stuck with the Duncan Custom Custom and Carvin H22 for quite a while, mainly because I tired of spending money I didn't have on pickups, and changing them out is one of my least favorite activities in life.

I decided the time had come, once and for all, to find the best pickup for me. I collected all of my old pickups, bought a few new ones, and recorded each pickup's raw output into my DAW using standard value pots and caps. I played various styles with each, playing the same phrases for each style. I critically listened to the raw recordings, and then reamped them through various amps, each suited to the particular recorded passages. In all, I meticulously tested around 30 pickups. The result?

My favorites, out of all of the pickups I tried, were the Golden Age Overwound for the bridge and the Golden Age standard for the neck. I was floored. For me, the clear winners were the least expensive pickups (purchased new). Others costing over three times as much did not sound or feel as good. Granted, I did not try every pickup imaginable (no need for me to try Invaders for example), but I tried most of the popular pickups in the PAF ballpark.

I even put them in my Kiesel Vader just to see what the sweetest PAF style pickups I've ever heard would sound like in such a guitar. Pure awesomeness. I can't say enough good things about these pickups. So I'll shut up now.

Obviously, what works best for me may not work best for anyone else. But for me, these pickups are not only the best value (by far), they are the best...period.

I have used several sets of Golden Age Overwounds and will continue to do so. These pickups sound great! I highly recommend them over any others out there on the market!

The golden age over wound pickups I will purchase for my other guitar projects. Highly recommended... you can pay more for equivalent sound but why?

Way better than expected

I have a ibanez rg hardtail mahogany with the stock pickups (infinity 3 and 4). Everytime I played it live, the sound was flat, nasally loud with unbalanced treble. (Pickup height/poles adjustment didn't fix it and tried it in multiple amps). I could never hear individual strings. Since the guitar is not a prestige model i could never bring myself spending big money on a set of pickups. It's a shame because it plays so nice and feels natural to me. My Les Paul with Seymour Duncans is what I use for live performances. But things have changed.

After some years of research i order a set of GA, Zebra overwound for the bridge 12k and regular wound 8k in the neck. WOW! I can't believe the difference it made. The sound is so amazing, the bridge makes some serious punchy distortion with a smooth clean jazz in the neck. Every note is heard. These are up there with professional grade pickups. Top quality craftsmanship, they even adjusted the pole pieces for the radius. I'm very happy with these pickups! Thank you stewmac for giving my ibanez a soul and now can play it live.

This is probably my 2nd favorite humbucking guitar pickup. Very balanced with crisp highs and tight lows. I have put it in several of my guitars and I have been very pleased with it.

installed these pickups in my personal Gibson les paul guitar and absolutely love them, they gave me the thicker bottom end sound I was looking for and the mids and highs are the perfect blend. I highly recommend these pick ups!! I will purchase more in the future!! Thanks Stew Mack!!

Really great tone

By

Verified Buyer

Several years ago I bought two Agile Les Paul guitars. They play great, but the pickups were weak. A couple years ago I upgraded the pickups on one of them with one of the top selling brands of pickups. It is now an AMAZING guitar. So I had my second Agile LP that still needed pickups but I didn't want to spend so much on pickups. So I tried a set of Golden Age Overwounds. I have to say, as a person who used to build PRS pickups back in the 80's, I am VERY impressed with the GAOH pickups! Construction is solid and they look great. The tone is really amazing, way better than the set on my other LP. It's warm, projects well, not peaky, not muddy, not brittle. They're warm and round sounding. I can roll the guitar volume off of the big fat LP overdriven sound to reveal a crisp clear full clean tone. I'll definitely buy another set of these soon. In fact, I may go buy another Agile so I'll have a place to put a new set of these humbuckers. Seriously beautiful tone.
