About bridge & tailpiece measurements

Bridge and Tailpiece reference image

String spread is the distance between the centers of the outer strings on a bridge or tailpiece.

Saddle radius determines the arc formed by all the individual saddle heights, and is similar to the measurement of a fretboard.

Stud/post spacing is the distance between the centers of the mounting posts of a bridge or 'stop' tailpiece.

Good replacement on Epi Dot

I was worried about the loose fit on the posts but it's not really a problem. It doesn't move after you put the strings on.

The sound definitely improved. Do not rattle anything thicker sound. Nests under the bridge put the old ones. New little small. I was ready for it and I have no complaints. Very pleased larger than the original course of the saddles. Impressions only positive. Thanks to Stewart-MacDonald's.

I read a ton of reviews and forums about bridges before I ordered this one. This bridge is a huge improvement over the stock one. The bridge fit perfectly with the included posts and stock bushings. I am going to order another one for my Epiphone Les Paul. A great investment!

Better intonation, lighter, and a crisper tone. Wholly recommended.

Gotoh TOM on Sheraton II

I bought the gold one to replace the oem on the Sheraton II. The Epi bridge is garbage. The screws don't stay where you put them and the range is insufficient. The factory-placed bass stud was not placed back far enough on the guitar, so even on the new one, I had to reverse some of the sliders. To do that, you need to remove the nut and screw from the slider. Before you do this, put some isopropyl alcohol on the nut to dissolve the threadlocker. The screw will then come out easily. After you reverse the slider, you don't need to reapply threadlocker. I used the original studs. This bridge is a big improvement over the factory one -- the range, adjustment precision, and overall quality make this a wise upgrade. Another note about the Sheraton II: if it doesn't stay in tune, you need to tighten the screws on the Grover tuner heads a bit more than you would on other tuners. I noticed that even when mine were tight, you could still touch a key and it would detune. Mine are a little harder to turn, but now they stay where I put them. This might be a common problem with all Epiphone instruments.

This bridge is a high quality drop-in that solved every issue I was having. (rattle noises, intonation issues.) plus it sharpened the tone and I have way better sustain now. Worth twice the price!!

Sloppy fitting posts/post-holes

By
(Customer's Reviews)

First of all, Stewmac is a great place to shop. Excellent service, speedy delivery, friendly, patient, expert advice. I purchased this bridge (#1511-N) as a replacement/upgrade for a 2010 Epiphone Les Paul Standard. 1) The Gotoh bushings do not match the existing holes (too narrow), but, as a consolation, the Gotoh studs work with existing bushings. 2) The Gotoh posts do not fit snugly into the Gotoh post holes. Specs indicate this is deliberate: Post-hole diameter 6.35mm, post diameter 5.94mm. I might have thought a bridge ought to be perfectly stationary, like the one I removed from the guitar, but Larry, a mild-mannered Stewmac Technical Advisor, says this is not uncommon, even with stock bridges on Gibson USA made instruments. He says the bridge will remain stationary under string tension. Time will tell.

nickel gotoh bridge

pros: longer saddle travel for better intonation. nice nickel finish. cons: sloppy tolerance on studs, makes rattling noise while playing. it's not bad for 20 bucks, but next time i'll spend more money for a better one.

Money well spent!

BIG improvement for my Chinese Les Paul copy. Very well made, and the extra few mils of adjustment room guarantee good intonation. I will certainly buy this bridge again when I need another.

Fantastic!

Needed to replace a very worn tune-o-matic on my 89 Gibson SG Special which has unusual large bridge posts and bushings. Worked like magic and the bridge is very high quality - similar to the Gotoh bridge / tailpiece sets also on Stewmac for a lot more! Thanks again Stewmac
