Bone's hardness and density contributes to good tone, it polishes well, and it allows more precise filing.

Stewart-MacDonald is your source for quality bone!
Bone is traditionally preferred for making nuts and saddles on quality instruments.

Shaped saddles will save you a LOT of work—a head start for the novice, and a timesaver for the busy shop. The sizes have been carefully researched, and accurately radiused, so that minor trimming, slotting, and sanding are usually all you'll need to do.

Blank saddles have oversize length and height, for custom shaping in your shop. They're ready for trimming, filing, sanding and slotting.

A model to go by

I have nothing but good words for my recent purchase at Stewart-McDonald. Order was taken quickly, accurately, politely, and with great professional attitude. Best of all, items were sent within several hours of order taking. I wish all my internet purchase experiences were this painless.

Bone Beats Plastic

I replaced the plastic saddle, which had a plastic shim underneath, in my Yamaha 450 with a bone saddle. Big, big difference from the plastic saddle/shim. Better tone, louder, and better sustain. The difference was immediately obvious. Kinda surprising. Here’s a tip for shaping your saddle. Filing takes forever. I recommend using a fine, hacksaw blade. Get a pair of small wood clamps, a metal straight edge, and a board. Sandwich the saddle between the board and the straight edge, and use the straight edge as a cutting guide. A knife sharpening stone is good for rounding the corners and removing burrs.

Good saddles

Arrived promptly and was exactly the dimensions advertised (i needed a 2.5mm thick saddle to fit in perfectly to a friends guitar). Yet again a great service from SM

Bone Buts and Saddles

I have a small shop. I build 2-3 guitars annually that I adopt out to friends and young people who share my love of the instrument. I also do a bit of work on older guitars. I have used both blank and shaped nuts and saddles from Stewmac without a single bad experience (except the one's caused by my own hand!).

disappointing

These are of good quality material but the size doesn't work. The saddle blanks are meant to fit Martin bridge slots but are barely .093 thick, which is 3/32, the nominal Martin saddle slot width. In fact, many Martin slots are .100 or more, making these unusable about half the time. they should be taller, too, as Martin has been making their bridges thicker and the slots deeper for the last 10 years or so. I'll use these blanks up eventually, but they should be resized to fit a Martin bridge.

Oversize Bone Blank

The blank I received was bent and twisted. Not bad, but not good either. Luckily bone is very workable and I didn't need to do that much to get it in shape. My saddle needed almost the full width and depth dimensions so very careful sanding was needed. Tolerance was not good but bottom line is it worked.

Good Nut and Saddle Material

I have purchased and used the bone saddle and nut material and both have worked very well. I prefer bone saddles and nuts for most of my acoustic work and bone nuts are excellent for many electrics as well. I have only received one piece of bone saddle material that could not be used because it was bowed. All in all, a good material choice.

improved clarity

adding a bone saddle on my old Sigma acoustic brightened and added clarity to its sound. Would recommend having it installed by a guitar shop. Only cost about $30.

Top quality material

These bone saddles are just as advertised; natural bone, nicely contoured. You'll probably need to do some cutting and shaping to fit your instrument, but there is ample material here to allow that. The only reason I gave only 4 stars is that there was a slight curve to my piece, which made things a little tricky when sanding. Bought this for a "restoration" of my old, beater acoustic -- with bone replacing the original plastic saddle, the guitar sounds better now than it ever did new. Next step will be a new bone saddle and nut for my "good" guitar.
