Use our grading system to choose your soundboard...
Color: Higher soundboard grades have more consistent color (color affects the instrument's appearance only, not its tone).

Grain straightness: Higher soundboard grades have straighter, more uniform grain due to slower wood growth, with more grain lines per inch. Variations in grain straightness generally don't affect the wood's structural integrity. Closely spaced grain has been traditionally favored, but luthiers have found that wider grain can produce very good tone.

Quartersawn grain: The higher the grade, the more closely quartersawn the wood. Higher grade soundboards are usually stiffer, stronger and more resilient, and less likely to deform under string tension.

Grain run-out: Our soundboards are sawn from split billets to reduce the amount of grain "run-out," caused by a twist in the tree. By splitting the log, the twist is followed when sawing. Higher grade soundboards have less run-out, for more strength. However, properly braced lower grades can be excellent soundboards, especially for classical guitars. Englemann spruce trees grow at higher altitutes, and usually have some run-out due to their smaller diameters.

Origin and drying: Our soundboards (except Adirondack spruce) are from western North America, and have been kiln-dried and stored for up to a year.

Good Wood

I ordered a mix of AAA and AAAA and am perfectly happy with both grades. The AAA produced beautiful instruments, tonally and visually. The variation in figuring produces instruments that are unique. I found the AAAA to be perfect, no grain run out, no knots, perfectly quartered, an absolute pleasure to work with as there was no lifting of grain when scraping in either direction.

Fantastic... :o)

I bought the middle grade sitka spruce and its really brilliant, stiff and nice grained, better than some top graded spruce i have bought from other suppliers in the past...

Grade AA - generally good

I bought three sets of AA tops to experiment with. One of them has excellent grain and one is fine for AA grade (both of these are 8-3/4" x 22" so plenty of scope for choosing the best part of the wood on a small top). The third has nice grain but has some run out on the edge and the usable width is 7-1/2", but this isn't a problem for the projects I have in mind. All-in-all I'm happy with the quality and price. All three are surprisingly well quartered. "Imperfections" (why they're not more than AA) include very variable grain width and some curved lines, as well as one miniscule knot or mark.

Grade AA excellent for first time build

I am in the process of building a parlor guitar (Gibson L-00 copy). I purchased the Grade AA Sitka Spruce top set. I'm very impressed with the quality of these tops for the price. I'm no guitar building expert (yet!) but the grain is pretty close together and the wood is very stiff. I think it looks great and can't wait to finish this up and hear it play.

great top for small instruments.

The small spruce tops are of great quality, most of the tight grain falls within the shape and the price is great.

AA Soundboard

Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this wood. Beautiful, even color and tight grain for being a lower grade. As a beginner, I feel comfortable with possibly making some mistakes on this board as it would be inexpensive to replace, but will also look great if I do a good job in the end! Best of both worlds...

do not like me

I´ve been buying these sitka sound board for years and received all very good , now these latter are the worst I´ve received. Fibers are far apart and i will lose up to 2 inches on one edge

AAAA Sitka Spruce

Beautiful material to work with, finished with subtle but very nice figure. And it sounds great.
