Instructions
ColorTone® Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable finish that enhances the beauty of the wood.

Available in convenient 13-ounce spray cans.

ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface.

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

ColorTone Clear Satin Lacquer typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

looks great at first

I love everything i have bought from stewmac but this. When i saw it i was like finally, i have been building painting and designing guitars for the last 6 years and i thought this was a god sent, but I was wrong.

I have used it on 2 guitars that after 1 year to the date began developing crack's in the clear coat. Kind of like what you would see in an Old Antique garage kept guitar or furniture. The cracks are in the clear coat they are not in the paint and they seemingly cracked out over night. For awhile i thought it was me and something i was doing (letting it dry in the spray area, not allowing enough dry time between coats)but it happened again on my latest one. It was only getting clear coated at that time the guitar wasn't even finished and the very same cracks were starting. Good thing for me i had only started on the neck and was able to start it over.

I think i would have freaked and swore off stewmac had i finished this one and had the same results.

Your go-to lacquer

Having tried different products over the last decade, I remember what I liked about the ColorTone clear. It cures thin (which is good), hard and gives a great shine in the end. But I agree it's too bad the nozzle doesn't match the quality of the contents.

Touch up with Colortone spray lacquer.

This spray can lacquer Is great for touch up work on new built instruments as well as repair work on older instruments. Picture of a cocobola guitar I built and had to touch up the neck heel.

Good Stuff

From a can ? It is unbelievable the way this stuff works, it has a wide spray on the nozzle that works just as well as a sprayer. "If the sprayed goes down, keep a can of this around" Once again my shop smells like a Les Paul, Thanks StewMac ! I will be back.

Keep a good working nozzle as a spare

I use these Spray Cans for a decade now. The quality got better and the lacquer got finer. During all these years I experienced that sometimes you get a bad top (nozzle) which messes up the coat. The whole can would keep performing bad, if you don't have a good top on hand. Therefore my tip: If you have a great working top (which you get most of the time) just clean it out and keep it as a spare. The tops from the "tinted lacquer cans" are better then the ones on the "clear coat cans. (just my opinion) Over all great stuff, great Company, deserves all Stars. I added a picture of one of my Guitars which I built and finished with these Spray Cans.

outstanding product !!!

I am working on my first guitar build. It's a solid maple body,I call it my mickey guitar. I used the black gloss lacquer aerosol and the clear gloss lacquer aerosol. I am amazed how great it looks. Plus when putting the clear gloss lacquer on I would suggest it to any beginner like my self. Anyone who purchases this product will be amazed.

Mandolin Project

I recently built an F5 style mandolin. I have built other instruments before. This is the first time I have used the aerosol exclusively. The finish turned out great. This product is easy to use and you can turn out a really good finish.

Nitro's the key....

To a high quality guitar finish that allows your instruments to sing with the inherent tonal qualities of their woods! Don't mute your woods with sound-deadening poly finishes.... Nitrocellulose lacquer in a can from StewMac is the answer.

Great Stuff

I just finished repairing a cracked finish spot where I accidently dropped my all time favorite guitar, a Carvin CS6. I almost passed out! It was on the edge and chipped to the wood. This laquer worked perfectly for my needs. Very good stuff to have around. I'll be getting the colored versions soon. I'm sending a pic and you can hardly see it. Look at the bottom right edge of the instrument.
