Fret End Dressing File

The first thing a player feels is the fret ends, so always shape them with this file. Smooth, non-marring edges glide on the fingerboard while the fine-toothed sides deburr and round the fret.

For rounding, shaping and deburring.
This specialized file dresses the ends of the frets after they've been installed, trimmed flush and beveled.

One thin edge is ground "safe" to help protect the fretboard, and the other rounded over. This file cuts only where it needs to: on both sharp corners of the unground thin edge, and on both of the wider toothed cutting surfaces.

The cutting surfaces smooth the fret end bevel, and the sharp corners nip off the sharp burrs at the edge of the fret bevel where it meets the edge of the neck. With the safe edge facing down, the cutting surfaces of this little file do a good job of rounding over and shaping the fret ends.

File dimensions are .062" x .125" x 6", with 3" cutting surfaces.

Essential for fretting
The Fret End Dressing File is one of seven tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Kit, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. Kit also includes our book, Fretwork Step By Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers and Fret Cutters. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Fret End Dressing File

I'm not a DIY guy for the most part. But I had a couple of guitars that the frets stuck out just a bit. I decided to try this since it wouldn't break the bank. With some tape, and care it did exactly what I needed. Took just a tiny bit off. With the fret erasers to polish, it's terrific. If I can use this and get good results, anyone can.

Nice little file

Works well. I used it also to true up the top of a high fret.

Even I can do it!

Wasn't sure if I should be filing frets, but after watching the video, thought I would give it a try. This file made it easy. In less than an hour I had turned by neck from vegetable slicer to smooth player. Saved a bundle. Thanks!

Great file

This file is fantastic. It really helped me clean up my fret ends. Very sharp and no worries about damaging my fretboard because of the smooth edge! Thanks Stew Mac.

Works well

Seems like guitar manufacturers have given up on the concept of fret dressing. This file makes the process of cleaning up the rough fret ends on a new guitar much easier.

fretfile

I really like this file because of the rounded side so it doesn't cut in to the fretboard.

nice compact, go-everywhere tool

Received it quickly and it was exactly as described. My 2nd-hand guitar, that I recently acquired, was NOS but the fret ends were just angle sanded and not finished. The fret ends were quite sharp. The fret dresser solved that in 1/2 hr. Thanks StewMac

Fret end dressing tool

Bought and inexpensive guitar and had some problems with the fret bars extending too far. Using this tool made it easy to clean up the sharp edges and with the smooth edge on the neck there are no scratch marks on the wood. Now this less than $100 guitar plays and feels better than my $500 guitar. Wonderful tool.

Fret End Dressing File

I have to say this fret end dressing file really saved my fingers from nicks and cuts from the sharp corners of the frets. It actually nips off the sharp burrs as well !!! I was truly amazed of how quickly the job was done. I highly recommend this to all bassists and guitarists.

Great Investment, Great Little Tool.

I had bought a Used Parker P-44... It was an NOS 2005. So it was seven years-old and the fret ends were hanging out of the fingerboard. This would have been an expensive repair at a Shop. But I did this myself in a half-hour. All 22 Frets! I am so happy with the results. So with a little patience you can get rid of those little razors that stick into your fretting fingers.
