We've done the difficult machine work, so you can customize it way you want. Made of handsome flame-grain domestic curly maple that finishes beautifully, it features a blank undrilled peghead you can bandsaw to any old-time shape you desire. Ready for final shaping, sanding and finishing, this neck fits our old-time banjo pot.

Specifications:
This is a high quality one-piece neck with matching peghead "ears." You'll save time and you won't need to tool up for complicated machine work: the heel profile and peghead handstop are shaped, and the upper surfaces are sanded flat. Peghead measures 3-3/4" x 7" (95.25mm x 177.80mm). A 7/32" x 7/16" (5.56mm x 11.11mm) slot has been cut to fit our 18" Hot Rod Truss Rod. Width at the nut is 1-3/16" (30.16mm). The 5th string peghole is not drilled, and the fingerboard and peghead veneer are not included.

The neck heel is machined to fit a straight-sided 11" (279.40mm)-diameter rim such as our Old-Time banjo pot. Please note that this shape will not fit our Five-Star® bluegrass banjo pot, or similar 11" (279.40mm)-diameter Mastertone-style banjo rim.

Easy finishing options
ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is an economical way for the beginner to apply a finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Only a few cans are needed to completely finish a neck. Or try brush-on application with Brushing Varnish.

Best banjo neck for old time and restoring old Gibsons

As this neck has all the difficult work already done, it´s time saving. The Hot Truss Rod fits perfect and is the best and safest solution. So far, I have ordered 3 necks - one for an old time banjo, one TB-1 Gibson and a TB-3 Gibson that I have converted into RB-banjos. The picture is the OT -banjo I built for my daughter.

Pretty, but not for the faint of heart

I bought this, and while very pleased with the figuring on the wood, this neck requires tons of work, and has far too steep of a headstock angle. Vega or Slingerland banjos use a much milder headstock angle. It makes no sense to me to have the angle at 22 degrees. It is also in need of LOTS of finishing, as the machining that is on it as arrived is pretty crude.

I had to widen the truss rod slot at the peghead substantially, as well as deepen it so the truss rod can be adjusted. I was hoping for something that reflected the quality of Stew-Mac's reputation, but this isn't it. I will make my own from here on out.

beautiful neck - not for beginners

The neckshaping is half finished and - obviously - it also needs a Peghead overlay, shaping of the peghead and a fingerboard. These things need some experience and the proper tools. Otherwise there's no way around screwing it up.

The routing for the trussrod fits the recommended truss rod perfectly except that the allen nut is wider than the rest of the trussrod so that needs adjustment too which is hard to do cleanly without a router.

But once these obstacles are overcome you will be rewarded with a beautifully flamed, strong and good neck for your Banjo Project.

Great necks.

These neck are worth the price, especially for those looking to save time. Filing and heel shaping required, but most of the work is completed. I recommend installing the truss rod to be adjusted from the heel end of the neck, to avoid a goofy truss rod cover at the peghead of your old-timey banjo.
