Alpha Control Pots

Read 108 Reviews   |   Write a Review

Alpha potentiometers are among the world's most widely used guitar tone and volume controls. These are the familiar pots we've supplied for years in 25K, 250K, 500K, and 1 meg-ohm versions, plus a long-shaft 500K version for Les Paul style carved-top solidbodies. Great prices, too—luthiers and repair shops can save big on orders of 50 or more.

Each pot has an aluminum split shaft that fits a coarse-knurled (18-spline) knob.

Alpha pots are audio taper with standard ±20% resistance tolerance. Each pot includes a flat washer, lock washer, and two hex mounting nuts for custom height adjustment on a pickguard or control plate.

#3755 25K-ohm
For controlling the volume or tone of active pickups, or for use after the preamp of a piezo-saddle transducer bridge.
Shaft diameter 6mm split shaft, coarse knurling
Thread   M8 x 0.75
Threaded portion height   3/8" (9.52mm)
Required mounting hole diameter   5/16" (7.94mm)

#0128 250K-ohm & #0130 500K-ohm
500K pots are standard controls for humbuckers, and 250Ks are usually used for single-coil pickups. A 250K gives a slightly warmer tone than a 500K, and bleeds off (attenuates) some of the high frequencies to ground. A 1-meg pot attenuates even less than a 500K—try one if you want to hear your guitar "wide open."

#3482 500K-ohm, long shaft pot
For Les Paul and similar solidbody guitars.
Shaft diameter 6mm split shaft, coarse knurling
Thread   3/8" x 32
Threaded portion height   3/4" (19.05mm)
Required mounting hole diameter   3/8" (9.52mm)

#3481 1 Meg-ohm
Get the most out of your guitar with a 1 Meg-ohm pot. All pots bleed a certain amount of the signal to ground, this "attenuation" can be used to warm the sound of your guitar's pickups, but you can also run your guitar "wide open" with these 1 Meg-ohm pots!

Which pot value should you choose?
500K pots are standard controls for humbuckers, and 250Ks are usually used for single-coil pickups. A 250K gives a slightly warmer tone than a 500K, and bleeds off some of the high frequencies to ground. A 1-meg pot bleeds off even less than a 500K—try one if you want to hear your guitar "wide open."

1-meg pots are also ideal for piezo pickups, as the ultra high impedance piezo element is more adversely effected by conventional, lower-value pots than magnetic pickups.

25K pots are for controlling the volume or tone of active pickups, or for use after the preamp of a piezo-saddle transducer bridge.

Replacement Mounting Nuts and Lock Washers are also available.

Very scratchy

Ordered two 500K pots, measured them both and they're both about 570K, which should be close enough for my purposes. I was very disappointed when I first took them out of the package and started playing around with them, because there's a noticeable grinding feeling that you get when turning the pots. I'll install them for now, but don't know what kind of longevity to expect with this grinding feeling.

That's the good ones!

If you're looking for pots for replacement or upgrade on a Japanese, Korean, French or any guitar that doesn't have 9.5mm holes, these pots are for you.

They are logarithmic if you search the information, and yes you only need Audio taper pots for guitar application (for both volume and tone).

They are heavy duty, smooth, affordable. They are just a little noisy, but it doesn't impact the sound of your guitar plugged.

To summarize a must!

500K Pots

On a Flying V project, two 500K pots were ordered. Upon receipt they tested at 390 and 410, very disappointing

Better than expected!

In a recent project to mod my Epi LP Jr I replaced both volume and tone pots with these 500K pots. They are both super-noiseless and do what they are supposed to...guitar sounds great!

Does what needs.

Smooth good quality pot. Only complaint I would have is these are large pots which can be a trick to put into the some guitars that originally used cheap pots. Wish a physically smaller one with the same quality was available.

500 K ohm mini pots

These are ok, low noise and seem to be pretty sturdy. I only gave them 3 starts because at first they seem a little cheaply made. They work fine and all I'm just curious to see how long it will be before i have to replace them.

Please stick to the plan

These are NOT 3/8" bushings. And how are you inserting a 3/8" bushing in a 5/16 hole?????

Styphy  Litlta, PA
StewMac responds

Styphy,
Allow us to clarify: 3/8" is the HEIGHT of the threaded portion. Its diameter is slightly smaller than the 5/16"-diameter we suggest for the mounting hole. Hope this helps and answers your question! Please contact us if you would like further assistance

Decent for the money

They work fine, and had the exact shaft length that I needed. They are a bit noisy though, which gives it a cheap feel. It would have been nice if Stew-Mac offered a higher-quality version of the same part.

High quality, predictable performance.

I have a 5- or 6-year-old, dual-humbucker Fender whose volume and tone pots started scratching at an early age. These 500k-ohm potentiometers soldered in without any undue troubles. They're smooth and silent. I highly recommend them.

Long shaft pots

These are very hard-to-find pots, so I must thank Stewmac for them.
Hardly overpriced
